oil filter housing issues

Well I attempted to change the oil on my wifes cooper s and when i got the filter out I found a black valve with a spring attached to it at the bottom of the housing, just sitting there, so since we have the extended warranty and there are other things wrong with it, we took it to our bmw dealer and they want to order a $800 part to replace the entire housing instead of just trying to fix the loose valve. turns out you cant just buy the valve by itself and its missing the clips that hold it down, what really makes me mad is that bmw of calabasas was the last entity to change the oil and the this bmw dealership wont cover this issue under our warranty, so now we are towing the car home and Im going to remove the housing and try to fix it, has anyone dealt with this before?? Any help would be appreciated!!

thanks in advance,

Jake

As much as this sucks, if the dealer had done this oil change and discovered it broken, they would have probably replaced it thinking they had broke it. At the moment, they think you did it.

Since the little clips are broken or missing, and BMW has a hold on individual componets to its parts, you will have to end up paying for the entire housing. Some would argue that it thier money making scheme.

I have seen them occasionally on ebaymotors for around $40.00. Here is an example of one found today: http://www.twenga.co.uk/offer/0158730525.html They are out there for far less than $800.

The housing is only $180 at pelicanparts. How can the dealer justify such
a markup???
I believe it's part number 11427563522 looking on realoem.com for a 2006 R53 oil filter housing.

The $800 probably includes the labor to swap it...

Go Pelican, or Classic Auto Campus gives a NAM 20% discount, or a wrecking yard.

Skip the dealers if it's not warranty!

ECSTuning.com carries MINI parts and they are cheaper then Pelican Parts. Just an FYI.

Good to know. The labor to swap it looks extremely simple and quick
looking at the Bentley manual and at the car itself.

You guys are a great help, I have a 86 Audi gt coupe which I drive everyday and frankly the mini scares the crap out of me, its like they built the car around the motor, so inaccessible, but a lot of fun to drive thank god. Im trying to find the exact year, im sure its an 02 or 03 s model.

thanks again,

Jake

So I got it home and the dealer didnt even charge my wife for anything, good news for me, now I am attempting to remove the housing and fix the valve problem, does anyone have a diagram of this they can send to me??? I might be able to fix it before I take it out.

thanks,

Jake

Its not really that easy. If the valve is out, I'm betting that the tabs at the end to hold it in are in fact broken. Which means you can't fix the broken tabs. You will have to either replace the entire housing or with a little luck remove the valve (CAREFULLY) from another housing and install it into the one on the vehicle still. Not easy but has been done.

So i fixed it, bought a bunch of little c-clips, both internal and external and found one that fits over the little valve, hugs it close but is a tad bigger than the valve, inserted it down into the filter housing and it clicked in, assembled filter and drove it, no oil pressure light on at all!!! total cost $.10 and the wife is very happy, and that makes me happy

Well, Its all put together and she driving it, so no pics and Im not going to touch it again until I have to. The assortment of clips I got from harbor freight for about $6 and its a box with a bunch of internal and external clips, I used the internal one that was just a little bigger than the diameter of the valve, and slid it in and i felt it lock into the little recess thats inside the hole for the valve itself
