EP Light on CVT
My wife has a 2003 Cooper with CVT. The car has about 2500 miles. The EML light came on about a month ago and the dealer "reprogrammed some of the software." Now the "EP light" is coming on where the gear indicator light is. The dealer says this is a common problem and they are replacing the wiring harness. Has anyone heard of this?
Welcome to MCO minix2
Common problem? Yes. Count me as one of the lucky ones to have had a faulty wiring harness on a CVT. Sometimes when the wiring harness is faulty it generates the EP code, sometimes the cars just stalls without generating any codes. You're fortunate that your dealer is on top of things. Apparently, the wiring harnesses were designed a tad too short and it doesn't take much before they start acting up. I believe this should have been a recall, but instead MINIUSA is choosing to wait until each of them becomes symptomatic. Your wife's car should be fine after the fix.
Good luck,
Kim

Actually, you're kind of lucky. On my brand new CVT, from day-one, I had EML, EP, DSC warning, flat tire (false alarm).
It took dealer FIVE MONTHS and 4 fix-it attempts to figure out problem was engine wiring harness and not computer software or hardware.
I think dealers now know to check that part first.
