I knew I hated it before I bought the car, and I knew I'd replace it with another **** eventually...but I didn't think the stupid thing would start to disintegrate within 3 months of owning the car
. I don't know how I scratched the cheap plastic faux chrome around the ****, but I did. Now a piece of that faux chrome has come off and I can see the white plastic underneath. What a piece of $h!t.
The shift **** on my Honda Civic was at least covered in leather and the one of my ancient Toyota Tercel was at least a hard black plastic that couldn't chip. I don't suppose they'll cover this in the warranty? Seems like undue wear in just 3 months.
Anyone have a Whalen **** for sale? I think I'll add it to my Christmas wish list...

I don't mind the shift **** so much, although we have a very slim selection when it comes down to it.. I know Robin Cassady on here has wood ones, I believe..
My biggest issue is not so much the ****, but when going through gears, I've pulled it off in the 1 > 2 shift..that's annoying..

Hey Vito!
Try taking off your BRASS KNUCKLES before driving.
But seriously, you say you hated the thing, and knew you'd replace it. Now you're surprised? To quote Waylon Jennings, "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it."

You might want to watch that you don't pull your steering wheel off while ripping the twisties. A little rough on the little Mini, aren't
you??

Never heard of one falling apart, or of pulling it off during shifts; on the other hand, I don't like the feel of the ****--don't like the "cutsy" depression on top. That's where I put my hand, after all!
I've seen pictures of Robin's shifters--they look just gorgeous. I just wish I could afford one...not that they aren't worth it...

I figure the Whalen ***** are pretty much indestructible and since I don't think driving my car should necessitate taking my jewelry off, seems the way to go...
You must pull up with seemingly all your might, and then some.
If you have a sun roof, open it first before proceeding. You may be thinking that I'm joking, but I'm not.
Also, be careful not to punch yourself in the face, once the **** finally lets go! Again, not joking...

If it is falling, there could be something wrong with the mount, no? I mean, I hear horrid stories of people trying with all their might to get these darn ***** off, and I highly doubt you have the strength of a whole human body in your forearms.
I could see how you think it is a piece of crap though... if something like that just fell off, I'd chuck it out the window and buy another car, hehe.
Kidding, kidding...

The factory shiftknob in my 2005 MCS is real chromed metal. After 4 years of use, still looks brand new. The gas filler door is also made of real chromed metal.
MINI cheapened some aspects of the second generation cars by using plastic chromed parts (Shift **** and gas fuel door in the S)
My Clubman S is auto, so the shifter is covered in leather.

I just wanted to jump in and add my $.02
My shift **** comes off in my hand way too easily. In fact, I had one come off on my first Mini test drive and I just assumed someone hadn't tightened it down all the way. Of course, that was before I knew how it was installed.
I'm finally asking the dealer about it Friday when I'll be in there anyway.
I am thinking about a whalen or other after market replacement, but do those use the same mount? If not, won't they have the same issue?

It's basically a female quick-disconnect fitting, custom-designed to perfectly fit onto a stock MINI shift lever.
It absolutely will NOT come off unless you want it off. If you do want it off, you can remove and replace it with one hand, even while motoring along.
You guys sure you are putting it back on ALL the way? It takes a good solid...and i mean SOLID whack to pop it back on all the way. If that doesn't work, get it replaced under warranty. I've had mine off a few times for interior mods I was doing and i've put it back on with a soft rubber mallet. It's only come off in my hand once...and that was when I didn't get it seated just right.

Thanks!
Well the only reason I tried it with the soft rubber mallet, was because i was thinking...if it took THAT much effort to get the sucker off the first time, it should take just as much force downward to pop it back on lol. It makes a good solid popping/thunk noise when you get it back on all the way, and it should take just as much effort to get off as the first time you yanked it off....or it aint on right. If that makes sense...
The chrome flaking and being scratched and stuff though...never had that problem. For that to happen so soon i'd recommend saying something to your dealer/tech and see what they can do for you. The only chrome I have flaking is on my keyfob from being in the same pocket as my house keys and stuff...and that's just starting to happen after a year now.

My 09 hardtop is an auto, and I got a very classy looking english oak shift ****, as nice as any of RC's. Was quite surprised at delivery.
