NYS Thruway +1 Mini 0

Yesterday on my way to work a piece of truck tire flew over the car in front of me and hit the front of my car.

First estimate was $650 to repaint the hood and replace the trim.

That sucks! I hope the guy at fault is paying for the damage!

No I will be paying for it. The thruway was packed and I am not sure what vehicle the tire came from.

The tire ripped the trim off on impact.

Man, to bad. I am curious though, why do you need it repainted? From the picture it looks like the paint is fine (keywords being: from the picture).

call a paintless dent repair guy first and have them check it out. i know a dent guy in Westchester County that did a ding in my hood that only cost me about $125. that trim piece is very easily replaced and only costs about $20 from the MINI dealer.

I have a dentless place right up the road. I will see what they say. If they can't make it close to perfect I will opt for the body shop. There are multiple dents but it doesn't hurt to get their take on it.

Yeah the trim piece with clips are around $20 according to the estimate.

Thats a bummer. Maybe now is the time for a carbon fiber hood? Might as well make a bad situation into a good excuse for a mod!!

Jeffc, why wouldn't you go through insurance? From everything I've read on this board, a moving piece of debris on the roadway is a no-fault collision.

I have a $500 deductible so the insurance would cover $150 of the damage. I will call them tomorrow to see if my premium will go up but if it does for $150 it isn't worth it.

I have State Farm and just got a divindend check for $260 ($130 per car) and don't want to mess up my record.

Jeff sorry about the incident, Looking at your mini makes me cringe, I have a pure silverblack top 06 and yours, other than differnt wheels, could be mine. Back to the subject of insuranced, my wife was a claims adjuster for 23 years, she says your rates will not go up, but for your best interest, in the long run pay the bill your self.

Thank god you weren't hurt in the incident.

Sorry that happened to you. Dead recaps littering the highway is a real problem here too.

I bet the paintless dent guy can get those out. As for the trim. It's not too expensive & easy to do. Make sure to order all the plastic bits that hold it on. Call Classic MINI in Ohio. They offer a NAM discount & ship fast.

So I had a couple friends over and I was showing them the damage when one of my friends sticks his finger between the hood and metal bracing and we all hear a pop (we just all looked at each other like that couldn't be that easy the hood was up so we didnt see it until he lowered the hood and we all sat there in shock). The big dent poped out not perfect but it looks better. I also have a appointment with a paintless dent puller to see if the can get the remaining dents out before I go the autobody route.

That reminds me of when my younger brother hit my dads car with a basket ball. All my dad did was reach behind and push the sheet metal back out. It looked like the dent was never even there.

Check with State Farm - sometimes those are covered under Comprehensive, which may mean a different deductible and no impact on your record... and c/f (paintedd) sounds neat as well.

PDR may be the ultimate best choice if they can do it, have heard they can darn near do miracles...
