MINI logo on steering wheel peeling off
I had my airbag assembly replaced w/in 6 months of purchasing my '06 due to the emblem lifting on the right wing tip. The dealer told me it is my fault and caused by me hitting the horn to hard. They informed me that they would replace it as a good faith gesture, but in the future, if it were to happen again, they will not replace it.
It has now been 1 year since my previous replacement and at my next service I will be talking to the dealer about replacing the assembly again....we will see how this goes.

Mine in my 06 is fine but a friend has an 05 MCCa that the logo peeled up on. The dealer tried to tell them it was his fault then finally relented and replaced the air bag assy. When my MINI went in for its annual service and some minor warranty issues, the loaner they gave me also had a peeling logo.
I had the first one replaced around 27000 miles....noticed the replacement one peeling up from right side about 5000 miles later. I had honked the first time around. I haven't honked since the replacement. If it is due to improper honking
, then why is mine peeling up when I have never touched it?
It is a design flaw. The emblem is designed to be the weak point of the airbag assembly so that it can inflate easily in the event of an accident. The designers should have come up with a different design with the new car. I can't imagine that at $800 a pop under warranty, MINI doesn't know about this flaw.

Fiancee's car is peeling up on one side. Took it to MINI and they would not replace it as I was told, "Someone has pushed the horn in the center and not the edges, making the logo ends come up."
Those that got yours replaced are lucky!

Lucky...no. We just have a Service Advisor with a little integrity.
That is the most ridiculous excuse I have ever heard. I guess they should put a warning sticker on the steering wheel if that is the case.
How do they explain it happening without the horn being honked? I was paranoid that maybe my horn honking had been excessively forceful so I was very conscious to not hit the horn anymore.

Took mine in for service and they WOULDN'T replace the airbag. Said my bending the logo wasn't covered by the warranty. During the "discussion" that followed I learned that the the horn is in fact on the sides and not in the middle. Now they tell me. So I'm looking now to remove and replace the logo with a sticker from Aesthetic Creations.

We used the horn often when we were in NY.
It doesn't take much pressure to bend the cheap plastic POS and have it come up at the edges. They replaced it once for us and told us not to do it again.
You can probably peel it off, straighten it and glue it back on. That would probably be less effort than trying to argue with the dealer.

I had the same problem with my MCC in the first week, and the SA told me the whole airbag needed to be replaced because the logo covers a sensor (or some other working component). If what they said is true, then I don't know how making a cosmetic fix may affect the operation of the airbag. My dealer replaced it without a fuss.
Has anybody noticed that all these problems seem to start with the right wingtip?

Mine has been poking up on the right side since day one - Hasn't gotten any worse so I'm hesitant to say anything about it to the dealer. They (Nick Alexandar MINI) just had to remove my airbag to replace the steering column (wasn't holding it's position). Leaving two poked holes in the collar that goes around the top of steering column...very annoying. I was thinking of taking it to Universal MINI to see if the holes are normal operating procedure (seems odd that work on the car leaves damage). Maybe I'll ask about the logo at the same time.
I, too, share the pleasure of the '02 design. To check my part and make sure there is nothing in my teeth. Although there seems to be some minor flaking going on. The logo, not my teeth.
This is obviously a design flaw and I wish MINI would own up to it. Mine was peeling up since day 1, but since it's bent from horn usage, they won't replace the air bag.
I don't want a new air bag, just a new sticker. How hard would it be for them to come up with a retrofit fix for this that wouldn't require the replacement of the whole bag.

Is this warranty or dealer-pay good will?
Does anyone know who is paying for the fix?
My '05 Cabrio S was fixed once by the dealer under (they said) "good will" which means the dealer eats it. Now, only a few months later--and with NO POUNDING on it--it's doing it again. The dealer (NW Mini, Fife, WA) says they're not fixing it again.
They also said it's $900 to replace the driver's side airbag assembly, required to replace the p.o.s. metal logo.
Has anyone contacted MINI re this? I'm thinking of showing up at MTTS LA with a big LEMON sign on the side of my car because at 33,000 miles I also have a driver's seat that's wearing out and a convertible top that shows the outline of the structural supports.
Damn good thing it's FUN to drive!

When we took the car in for our next scheduled service, they replaced the airbag assembly and also told us it was a "one time" thing. Then we got the talk about the proper way to honk the horn.
