July Drive: July 31-Williams Dam Picnic

Sorry about not posting about the June drive, I was out of town. However, here are the July drive details!

Meet in Evansville at the East Side Lowes parking lot, NW corner, at
9:15 am, hitting the road at 9:30 sharp. We'll stop and pickup more
cars in Oakland City around 10:00 in the Grandy's Parking Lot. For the
trip up to Williams we will take mostly 2-lane Indiana highways, and
make a stop in Washington Indiana at the KFC for Chicken and fixins, and
then drive hwy 450 to the Williams Dam for a Picnic lunch. There is
some BAD news about Williams - Governor Mitch Daniels has decided that
cutbacks are needed and they are closing the camping and picnic area of
Williams to vehicle traffic. I spoke to the care taker and he told me
that we could park in the main lot and walk into the picnic area, but
that the picnic tables were being taken so we might have to bring our
own table or sit on a blanket. We'll visit that problem as we get
closer, and next year we may have to pick another location for the picnic.

After eating lunch the trip back to the local area will be a little
different. We will cross the White river on the covered bridge, which is
still in use because the new bridge isn't complete yet. After crossing
the river we will wander thru some back-woods areas of Indiana that few
Hoosiers have ever seen before. The roads are all paved, but are rough
and bumpy in some spots. There are also 2 small areas of construction
about 150-200 feet each where there is gravel, so we'll slow way down
for them. This leg of the drive is about 22 miles, ending just north of
West Baden. When I made the test drive on these roads my GPS went
bonkers, so I hope we don't run into any Alien space ships there.

From West Baden we'll take 2-lane roads for a few miles and then exit
again onto country roads traveling down to the Patoka Lake area. Then a
few more highway miles over to Duboise, and then the back roads from
Dubois to Jasper. From Jasper we'll stay on 2-lane highways for the trip
back.

Total off highway mileage is 36 or more, and total trip mileage from
Evansville is about 200 miles.
