hi...got back to this forum after a couple of years...decided to stick with my prelude but might be leaning towards mini again...just a few questions that hopefully people here would gladly answer...what's the deal with the waiting list?, is this how mini sell their car? or is the demand so great that production can't keep up, like how i recalled a few years back...my brother got disappointed that he can't get a mini on hand that he just decided to get a z3...is it worth to get a used one?...is the mini safe to carry my 11 month old son?...thanks.
If you don't like to wait (who does) you could buy a MINI right off the lot at Long Beach or South Bay MINI for MSRP. I would look at the used market...you can probably get a great low mileage MINI that still has plenty of the 50,000 mile warranty left on it, loaded with extras for lots less than what the dealer would charge. Check out the NAM marketplace, or autotrader.com.
As far as the MINI being safe for your son...take a look at the crash test ratings here. Also notice that it is really hard to roll a MINI. I'm not very knowlegable about other child portability issues, so maybe someone else could chime in.
I can tell you that I love my MINI, and that it'd be great to add a new enthusiast to the list. Good luck

Yes the car is safe, but it is a bit ackward getting him into the child seat in the back....then again, so is your Prelude (I have both, so I can tell you that the MINI has more back seat room than the 'lude). I have 4 boys, and I usually take 3 of them to school at the same time. And I am sure Juan will tell you the same as he has a small son as well.
Also, mileage is great, it's safe (6 airbags), and if you want, Costco now offers MINI's at (don't quote me...) I believe $100 under MSRP. Check it out, you can't go wrong in a MINI
BTW, I bought mine used...ebay!!
