Official SPAM

Guys, if I was interested in MOTD, I would go to the events area and look it up.

I don't recall getting notifications about other events from the site administration. I don't see the need for me to get MOTD "official" SPAM mails either.

I think you can just go "unsubscribe" from the MOTD mailing list (in the Event Planner) to stop notification.

Actually, this latest PM was a one time broadcast PM to those that had recently visited NAM. The reason for this is we have had *a lot* of traffic over "contact us" and via PM asking on a daily basis when registration was going to be open.

Also, I hardly consider a PM that is contained within NAM, from the NAM founder, to be SPAM in any context. If it was email, perhaps... but it wasn't.

The delete button is easy to use, Gromit... and it's not as though you get these every day.

Is it spam? Nah, I consider it spiced ham.

SPAM by any other name or excuse smells as bad...

It wasn't from the founder, it was from a member. At least the last one today. I summarily deleted the others so can't say on them.

I have to hit my BS button. (It's on my keybaord, don't y'all have one? ) PRIVATE messaging implies & normally describes private. Not broadcast messages to large groups of people. If someone is going to the MOTD they'll be hitting the forum a lot. There are plenty of opportunities to plaster things & announcments all over NAM. There's the main NAM page, the main MOTD page, there's the MOTD forum, there's banner ads on the top, there’s ads down the side. I mean come on...

I too am a IT guy and deal with blocking this stuff all day long, and unsolicited broadcast email (which is what is generated by a PM on NAM sent to a number of people) is unwelcome (to me). It's only been 3 in two weeks or so but I don't approve of the principle or the trend. One about some calendar, one about gambling night, and I forget the third. Multiply 2 a week times the number of sites I deal with personally and professionally and it's a pain.

I admit the volume is slight here so far, but not when you consider I had NO SPAM from NAM till two or three weeks ago. It's something new, it's being tried, and the supposed purpose of this forum is feedback on what we like and don't. If someone objects, I don't think 'you have a delete button' is a terribly good answer.

I love NAM, I appreciate NAM, and have a good idea what it takes to run such a endeavor. I created and ran a enthusiast web, and also organized national rallys through it with about the same number of attendees as MOTD. But I would NOT spam my members. I'm 99% happy with NAM and thank NAM's founder and will happily pat him on the back with appreciation when I next see him for the incredible site and job he does.

But, saying we can use the delete button is not a valid excuse. If anyone truly thinks that's fine, well then give me your email address and stand by. Let's try a experiment, I can dedicate a mail server just to you! KIDDING

Same thing for saying I can 'opt out'. Riiight. I can 'opt out' of many spam lists. It should not be up to me to 'opt out' of spam, it should not be sent. In my opinion, again if you disagree kindly forward your emai...

For my coup de grace I just went looking for the site's published privacy guidelines, planning to paste what I found about respecting my privacy etc here. Unless I'm missing something, there are NONE! Well there's your problem! There's a nice long list of what I can't do, but I don't see any commitment from NAM on what IT won't do. I find that shocking, and needed in my opinion by a site that's grown big, successful, and with many commercial ties. I think creation of that would be a useful process in itself. After the Dragon. Too much going on for the next 8 weeks or so!

OK, said my piece, tried to be reasoned, calm and fair. But, I know at least two-three people who exist on NAM primarily to argue, oops, I mean debate, so I'll get my fire extinguisher out. Funny they all live in the DC area. Hmmm. Before you flame me, I admit and reiterate these are my feelings about broadcase PM's.

I have no right to say or suggest anything, beyond what the title of this forum seems to say. Offer feedback.
