have you guys ever thought of upgrading to phpBB or vB? both of these are incredible, and would make things speed up a little around here. especially vB. you can get php for free, too. just thought i'd ask. forums are great now, but you'd have a lot more options with one of these other two.

phpBB is actually in use now...albeit an older version. We are looking at vBulletin for the very reasons you mention. The issue starting to be explored now is how to migrate to that platform. Stay tuned...

As far as migrating - you can upgrade your phpBB to phpBB2 and then can you import scripts provided by vBulletin to convert to a vB forum. Other things obviously require work like the integration into your site and layout.

I'm starting work on a migration plan. Unfortunately the forums are but one piece of the puzzle (but one of the larger ones). I just want to move carefully so that we schedule a weekend to bring the site down, do the migration, and bring it back up without major headaches. I expect that we will do multiple dry runs using our development systems prior to the move in order to make it as fast and painless as possible. Thanks for everyone's offers of help!

bingo. this is the easiest way to get from phpBB to vB without screwing much up. as i said, whatever you need, if you get stuck along the way or whatever, just hit me up with an IM or an email.

Wow . Hey that's cool you have dev boxes to play around with.

Trust me guys, that's the best way to do things. I have dev boxes at work for the prod boxes, and when it comes time to upgrade database driven software, it's the safest thing to do.
