I remember that VWVortex put the hometown of members below their name (where we have our membership date and 1st gear.

I think that having this little bit of info makes a great difference, because I ended up meeting a LOT of people just by noticing that they lived near me.

Can you do that without too much trouble? I think it would really help build the community.

Good idea, that would help to see where everyone is from as well as build community.

Cheers

Ditto here. It's one of the features I really like on MINI2.com

I agree. There is another thread talking about sorting members by area also. We need to find individuals in our areas so we can get together and drink. I mean, talk about our babys.

Obviously some people would want to be able to opt out of this for privacy reasons. Like Madonna for example, who I'm sure is a regular poster here...

Certainly should be an option, but if someone includes that info in their public profile then they are willing to allow it to be public.

You can always make it a bit anonymous by just indicating your homestate or region or make up a silly name.

In Fort Collins, Colorado, I always said I was in "Fort Fun"

Now that I am in Birmingham, I will use "Burning Ham"

Where are ya, Mark?

Agreed. The "option" should lie in whether folks include the information or not, as opposed to turning the display of the information on/off. Easier to implement, I should think.

Thanks for everyone's feedback on this. I've added this to my list of feature enhancements to consider. I think this really points to a change in the registration and account management side of the site to capture this information and choose whether it is displayed or not (effectively it is opt-in/out). Given that I've just started to contemplate my wish list (and yours) for an upgrade to the forums this will be some time in coming. Keep the feedback coming as it will give me a better requirements list when evaluating upgrade options. On a related note I haven't been slacking
