Non-vendors
The original intent was that it would be used just like I see it on a lot of other sites...it would be a list of what you've done to your car, your favorite saying, etc.

Vendors
For vendors that are on the site their signature could include their banner, contact information, and a tag line for their business if they wanted.

In earlier versions of the software there wasn't the ability to restrict links to URLs and that has been used to the advantage of businesses that have customers on the site but do not support the site directly. Unfortunately because the setting is pretty course

so if it were to be turned on at this point it would break users that are linking to a favorite thread, their personal blog, offsite gallery, etc. For this reason I have hesitated turning off the ability to include linking in sigs and have opted for contacting people when we notice that they are linking to some type of business. Unless another link goes to something R-rated we don't make a big deal out of it.

To make things easier for the mod team it would help to turn off the ability though.

My 0.075 cents worth given the current exchange rate

Mark
Makes sense that you don't want to alienate users (possibly paying users) that link to their blogs or whiteroofradio podcasts or a video of their car. If it's r-rated, let me know and I'll check it out for you . Don't make things easier on the mods just to do it. That would take away some of their involvement...akin to a police officer walking a neighboorhood as opposed to driving it. Like I said before, it's just something to think about with recent events in mind

The issue for this is just like the others...there is a pattern that develops and when we finally have a belly full of it and call someone on links in their signature (even though they may have been contacted multiple times asking that they be removed) all hell breaks loose and its labeled as censorship, etc....even though if you look at the site guidelines we outlined the policy back in 2003.

SIGNATURES
A maximum of 300 characters OR an image with dimensions of 500 pixels wide by 100 pixels and filesize of 30KB or less is allowed. Links to commercial web-sites are not allowed without prior express written permission from North American Motoring staff.
For now I'm okay with leaving the policy as is and having the mods, vendors, and members report these issues if they see them. That said, in light of the recent issues, if I start seeing links being used for some type of promotion I'll have to remove linking altogether.

Since there is an option in the user CP to turn off signatures, I don't see this being a problem. If it really bugs some members, they can disable all of them. I keep avatars turned off for example. I like the signatures since many link to their blogs and photos, mod pages for their cars, etc.

It's a fine line you're trying to walk, Mark, and I envy you not in the slightest. But, for what it's worth, I think you guys are doing a fine job. Someone's always gonna try to push the edge out to see what they can get away with. As long as the rules are reasonably clear, they've got no reason to whine when the lease gets yanked. We are visitors and guests here. I was raised to mind my manners in other people's houses. Humble opinion. Mine.

You and I share that opinion, Cap'n...
Compared to the cesspools that most automotive forums turn into.... NAM is a beautiful place.... and I think Mark and the mod team do a fine and thankless job of mostly keeping that way... hard to weed a 1000 acre garden...
