Is 51k miles too many for a used MC?

Price notwithstanding ($17,500), a fully-loaded all-black 2005 R50 MC, automatic with fancy wheels and low-profiles (as well as stock rims and tires) purchased by second owner from Mini dealer in Kentucky, who then put 19k mis on it in 13 months. SUPER-clean in photos, has no more warranty, but does have three years of extended service. Needs to be dependable as my only car. THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT!!!

That is A LOT of $ for a base Cooper with that mileage.

What year?

WAYYYY too expensive! I paid $17k almost 2 years ago for my loaded 03' MCS with 47k miles! Clean as a whistle too! But as far as the mileage goes, 51k is fine...like I said I bought mine with 47k and now have 59k on it.

Oops. I just edited my post to reflect that it's a 2005. It's just that I REALLY want that all-black, and they're pretty hard to find with exactly the right specs. S-models are a bit easier (I guess cuz all-black implies a high degree of kick-assedness), but more expensive. Thanks for all your input!

I personally may consider that price for a 2005 MCS with 51k, but even then that is not an amazing deal.

The previous owner did a moderate amount of driving if it has 51K...
Since June 2005 my MCS and I have racked up almost 65K on her. Still a charmer. :-)

Is it a CVT or Manual? CVTs are known to go around 75k (but many don't at the same time, just chance.) What options are in the car, 17.5k sounds a bit high for a 3 year old MC. I paid 16.5k for a 2 year old MC with 51k miles, sport package, OBC, leather interior, CVT, front fogs, a few other things that I cant think of right now...

What type of miles were they? Highway for the most part would be fine. . . city stop and go traffic would cause more chances for engine overheating.

The MC 5-speeds were known to go out too, but I think they fixed the issues in 05 with a getrag tranny.

17.5 is too expensive for a 3 year old MC. You could buy a brand new one for 20k and change.

I just paid $14,500 for my '05 MCS (pretty well optioned) less than 2 months ago, which had 51k miles on it. That price seems very strong to me. I have bought and sold several cars over the past few years, and as a BUYER, I find Edmunds to be very close to true market values. I use Kelly when I'm selling.....

Too much bro. Like everyone is saying, you can get a MC S with the same miles for that much or get a brand new one for $3k more! Another one will come along-- or whip out the kBB private party book on him for 'fair' condition and see if he/she lowers the price. I'd pay maybe $13ish for it.

I agree with everyone else who has said you can easily get a comparable year and mileage MCS for that much.

Way too high for a base Cooper.

Car has automatic, sunroof, real leather (very good condition), chrome package, trip computer (no nav), steering wheel radio controls, xenon headlights. Apparently no stabilization control, but I'll mostly be driving around town in New Orleans, which mostly resembles the moon. Not alot of fast corners. ;-) The car also has VERY nice 18" aftermarket rims w/new performance tires PLUS the original rims/tires. I'll sell the aftermarkets, hopefully for about $1k, cuz I'm an OEM kinda guy, so take that off of the price I guess. Anyone interested?

Scoopmama, the car was sold to no. 2 owner at a Mini dealer in Kentucky, but he lives in rural Georgia. He says he has to drive three towns away to go see a movie, so that may explain it. Car certainly doesn't look dogged in the pix.

Thanks again all! I'm not looking for the greatest deal in the world, but I don't wanna be totally stupid. It's just that the all-black is hard to find, and I can actually drive the car home easily from Georgia (as opposed to New York where I found a very nice '05 MCS for $20k). I guess I'm looking for permission LOL!

If this is the car that you want, go get it. Don't worry about getting the best deal if it's what you are looking for. Good luck!

Buy it and have fun. You obviously want it pretty bad.......wouldn't hurt to try offering them maybe a couple of thousand less though...they would almost certainly make a counter offer, and you would have saved some bucks.

Good Luck>>>.

Exactly, go in there and tell them $13k and don't back down. You will have to get up and walk out a few times though. If it is a dealer they maybe paid $12-13k for it.

Guy says he's got 22k in it from the dealer purchase and the wheels, all purchased at 39k...how can that be? OK, mostly I just wanted to know if 51k mis is OK...our closest dealer is over an hour away, but then again it's out of warranty, so I'll likely go to my local shop for fixes. Thanks all!

Either that car has had some serious problems or he is completely BSing to jack the price up on ya. Im gonna go with the BS though with this one. Honestly, if the guy is jacking around with the car like that walk away, you wont feel good about your purchase later on if you know you got a bad deal.

Maybe he paid way too much, but that shouldn't mean you need to. Sounds like a story designed to maximize his profit.

Offer less and walk away if it's not accepted is my advice.

Try Carmax, you can do better than that price, and you really want to think about that CVT. There is a reason they don't sell those in a base model any more. Black Coopers are out there, you just have to look.

I say go for it. It sounds like the car you've been looking for, and trust me - I learned a long time ago if it's got what you want, get it. Doesn't sound like you're hurting for $.

I bought Harmini with more mileage than I'd like, but she had exactly what I wanted, including the 'dreaded' CVT. I'm OK with that. And I can tell you for every naysayer who responds there will be somebody here with the opposite opinion, so in the end, it's up to you.

Go with your gut.

If you need help with any repairs, this is surely the place to be - even then, expect many different answers.
