Any info on Bored Out Engines

Has anyone out there bored out there current engine block to make 1.8 liters or greater. If so, where and how is it holding up.

Blew up my engine and may need to purchase new engine or new internals.

Give Jan a call at RMW. He has been working on this project for some time now.

I have the ability to go to 2.0L but it isn't cheap. If you are interested you can PM me for details.

You're not going to gain significant displacement from just an overbore. Even boring out the engine by 2mm (which is big) only takes you from 1,596cc to 1,682cc. And it's a pretty poor return-on-investment, considering that you have to buy new pistons, new rings, and completely disassemble the engine down to the bare block to have it bored out.

Depending on how damaged your engine is, you may have to do most or all of this anyway, so it might be something you want to do, but keep in mind that a 2mm overbore isn't going to leave you much room for further boring if you have need an engine rebuild in the future due to normal wear and tear.

To get to 1.8L or larger, you're going to need to increase the stroke of the pistons, which involves either a new custom-ground crankshaft or having your current crankshaft offset-ground. If you increase the stroke, you'll also need custom-length connecting rods, which aren't cheap either.

It's possible, but you have to decide how much you're willing to spend.

I would only consider boring to 1.8 when and if the engine's life is dead and I need a new engine.

There was a thread on here somewhere that people had replaced their engine blocks with Dodge Neon SRT-4's block, quincadentally the same block as our mini's just in a 2.4L! Our block is made in Brazil, and at the same plant as the SRT-4. Do some searching and asking around. I forget where it was, it has been a few months.

you dont NEED custom length rods to stroke, you just have to get pistons with the pin in the right spot, which means custom pistons. or talk to jan from Revolution, he working on a kit

^ I would like Jan to chime in on this...Would this be cheaper and if so could it take as much power?

no.... I don't plan on revealing too much of the technology that went into perfecting this engine. There is much that needs to be done to make it happen properly

Yeah, custom pistons are quite expensive for forged i think. But probaby not as much as custom rods. On the other hands, you could do both, to get optimal piston speeds around TDC. Oh, if only i had more money than brains (then again, i am going for a 200hp NA cooper!) I would normally perfer to bore big than stroke an engine (although the last one i built was both, from 221ci to 276ci, but i got alittle caried away on that build). I might even consider this kit in the future ( i want one of his heads, independent throttle bodies, and a standalone ecu, lol). HOpefully all within the next couple of years)

Beecher

good luck
