R50/53 Service Advisor says "All MINIs brakes squeal"...!?
My '06 MCS started squealing a bit as the weather got colder but only during soft stops and most times near the end of the stop. I feel better knowing others have experienced this. My brakes still feel and work fine, so I am not concerned.
As an aside, all of my Mountain bikes have disk brakes and cold, wet, dirt and water, all cause loud squeals. None of these things effect stopping. It is a function of a vibration frequency that the elements and brake pad material cause. As long as they do their job, don't worry.
I'm at the dealership right now for the same problem and just got told the same thing! Apparently the Mini doesn't have the same metal strip that "regular" cars do to indicate that brakes need replacing. Instead, Minis have an electronic sensor that lights up a button on the dash. So, the SA said that some squealing is normal as it's a performance car, and my brakes are perfectly normal.
me too
The service advisor who checked me in for service said all brakes squeal.
I said you and I both know brakes are not supposed to squeal.
Well the tech who worked on my car he was awesome, said it's the pads Mini uses,
they tend to squeal .. and give off lots of brake dust.
He did skuff my pads up and that seemed to be a temp. fix
Thanks Jose'

Well, if that's the case, will they install some of those green pads or something of equal non-squeelishness when we have factory service, or do they have to use "genuine beemer" parts?

This was an issue in the VW GTIs as well... also, it was said that if you brake hard a few times it goes away... otherwise, there was also a very easy fix for the brakes mentioned but I can quite remember what it was (it had to do with one of the materials used which if changed stopped the whole noise issue)... you might want to check VW Vortex. it was for the old GTIs (like the 20th) not the new ones...
Since it has gotten colder out I have had an occassional squeal just as I am coming to a stop, under light pressure. Otherwise the brakes are quiet, no pulling or other symptoms of a problem.
I think that need to be clear here. We are not talking about continuous squealing, grating noises, grinding noises, metal to metal type noises. Those are serious and need to be looked at.
The minor squeal starting under 20mph to a stop, under light pressure, is usually caused by a build up of brake dust. Disassembling and cleaning the brakes, and maybe scuffing the pads and rotors usually clears it up. Warmer temps seems to help also.
Has anyone tried the bronze brake bushings and had less squealing?
I know that when I was changing my snow tires the dust shield on the passenger side front seemd to be loose. Or at least more "tinny" sounding that the other. I'll have to check that out when I change over again.
Something else to put on the "To do list"

nope they have not come up with real fix

Squeal update
Well, I guess like my knees and hips hurting in cold weather, my MINI squeals in cold weather because the squealing has stopped now that spring has sprung in dear Atlanta, GA.
We'll see what next winter brings...

I have about 10K on my 06 MCS... initially the brakes squealed a bit during light stops when it was cold and wet out... (the car sat for a few mo before I became its second owner)...
No more squeals, and I use her mostly for highway commuting.
once every few weeks I do go for a fun ride in the country side to blow out the carbon and clean off the brakes though... just for the car's health you see
(BTW, the dealer said the same thing to me... use them more agressively to 'clean' them...)
HTH!

I know I had written somewhere here that my brakes don't squeal, but that was a while ago, and for a while now, my brakes have been squealing, but only sometimes. It doesn't bother me enough to do anything about it, but when I replace the pads (and rotors, if necessary), I'm going with aftermarket pads. Hawk HPS pads have gotten good reviews here.
