Meet me on Mt. Evans!
Meet me on Mt. Evans!
Yes, the Mountain Passes runs are this Friday. I myself will be going up Mt. Evans this Friday with my son. Here is my agenda:
PM me if you are in. Better, POST in the MINI5280 Calendar in NAM.
JPS
Open up the passes! (This info from the MINI5280 Calendar for this Friday)
The Friday before Memorial Day is the projected opening day of Colorado highways and mountain passes that are routinely closed and under snow in winter. Depending on the spring weather conditions, these high mountain roads are cleared and ready for MINI Cooper motoring on this day. At this time of year, these roads are subject to last minute closure, making it more fun and challenging to be one of the first to motor these special highways!
A few examples are:
- Leave home 6:30.
- I-70 and Morrison Rd by 7 am. Meetup there.
- West to Evergreen, the Hwy 103 to Mt Evans
- Up and back by 11 am or so, with pictures
- Idaho Springs (Tommyknocker) for lunch (wings!!(
- Then to Copper Mountain for some business
- Then home by 5 pm....soccer practice at 6.

A few examples are:
- Mount Evans Scenic Byway (highest paved road in North America) to the 14,064 ft summit, with 10-15% grades near the top. Near to Denver, at the tail of the Western Dragon (MITM).
- Independence Pass (elev. 12,095 ft) -- a narrow (near the top), 6% grade highway (paved) between Leadville and Aspen, near the highest some of Colorado's highest mountain peaks.
- Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park, featuring the highest continuous, paved road in America at 12,183 ft.
