Track prep

Hello everyone, I just picked up an 06 r53 with 73k miles. I'm looking to build as to be able to do a few track days every yer at VIR and Road Atlanta. I can't sen to find any options for 4 point safety Harnesses that will pass tech inspection without installing a full cage. one of the guys that I will be going to the track with runs a bar that is mounted behind the front seats that the 5 point harnesses attach to but, I haven't been able to find something like that for the mini. could someone tell me what type of setup I need to run my car at the track. I am a complete nubee so pleasedon't just my lack of knowledge . Thank, John

I reckon what I'd do is first study the organizers at VIR and Road Atlanta. Tech requirements do vary. The folks that buy the track insurance set the rules, according to their underwriter.

I do believe that some organizations (TNIA perhaps?) would allow the Schroth Quick Fit in a hardtop, although that would not pass muster at more serious events.

So go to the horses mouth, and read their tech inspection requirements, including helmet certification.

Eddie07s can you shed some light here sir?

Cheers,

Charlie

I instruct with a couple groups that run VIR. there is only one 4 point that will ever pass tech and that is the schroth quick fit

some instructors will not be happy to use them either...

I would NOT run VIR or Road Atlanta at racing speed without full safety systems - either one can bite very hard indeed.

I'm old and have learned that sh*t happens.

8-9 tenths maybe, but not in the company of strangers, and no harder than that.

Same threshold as the Dragon, for the same reasons - potentially severe consequences.

Cheers,

Charlie

99% start out in the street car with no safety extras other than a helmet...

None of the rules require anything extra until you get into wheel to wheel or time trial

I instruct and I get into the complete strangers cars for the whole weekend, incidents are rare, very rare in the beginner groups the risk goes up when you get into The upper intermediate and advanced.

Most novices are really slow and easy to control from the instructor side

Concur w/Mr. Blah. I've been an instructor for over 40 years and have sat in the right seat of every kind of vehicle imaginable. I run Schroth Quick-it Pros in my GP and use a Simpson Hybrid S. Yes, "poop" does happen but, at my age, I have more things to worry about. If every "noobie" wanting to get into running HPDE or open track had to run a full cage, fire bottle and harnesses, I think we'd see a serious drop-off in participation. Granted, there's a bit of truth to the old addage that "If you do this long enough, you're going to have an off-track excursion". I've had mine.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I will pick up driver and passenger schroth quick fits and run them until I decide to make it a track only car and then I'll put in a proper cage.
