Car won't start - just cranks?

Bought our 2011 Countryman S All4 in September with 37k and within days the HPFP failed and was replaced at no charge from MINI.

Yesterday morning it wouldn't start and just cranks. Had it flatbedded last night to a shop that works on German cars and they're still diagnosing.

Here's what they are saying so far:
Doesn't have any codes
Not immobilizer as it cranks
Ruled out coolant sensor
Has 1300 PSI on fuel rail
Has spark
Injectors are getting pulse
Still need to verify crank sensor (and one other)
All cylinders at 90 PSI - below spec but they're all equal
Thinking may have skipped timing - using o scope next

My nagging fear is a failed timing tensioner. MINI extended the warranty on the Cooper S tensioner so not out of the question.

Tensioner.....I kind a doubt it. You have the updated N18 engine.

Call your MINI dealer, as for service Dept. Provide your VIN and ask the Service Advisor if the thermostat has ever been replaced, or thermostat hose campaign performed. Odd I know, but its electronic as much as it's mechanical. Seen a few R60's do this. And the T-stat is an updated one. And in some cases, have seen where in lieu of new thermostat, a new updated hose is installed which has a new temp sensor in line, kit comes with a new pig tail harness extension, slip tie.

Thanks for your reply!
To the best of my knowledge it hasn't been replaced as we bought it 5 years old with 37k and all of the services listed in CarFax were regular maintenance. The shop stated they bypassed the thermostat which is part of the diagnosis for the thermostat and was one of the first things they tried.

While I can understand the engineering reason for tying so much to the thermostat (to prevent damage) leaving someone stranded for something like this doesn't make sense (ours was in the garage) and doesn't give me much faith in future reliability as its been down hard twice in 6 months for this and HPFP.

i believe most MINIs are reliable and we might have one that will continue to have issues.

Usually T-stats will go during a "cold snap" ( Temps down to 32-35*). If you had one around the time this happen, I would give it the weight it deserves. GL!

Update from the mechanic:

They isolated to the low pressure fuel pump but it's actually the relay that drives the pump and not the pump itself. Unfortunately this relay isn't replaceable and is embedded in a module in the passenger kick panel part of the CAN bus.

$1,200 parts, labor, programming and diagnosis plus about a week..

Yay! Guess it could have been worse.

F20 20A fuse - K96, Fuel pump relay 1

K96 Fuel pump relay / Passenger compartment fusebox

Interesting...what would have caused it, water/moisture entering cabin ? Any other notable issues
with cars electrical components ?
