Oil Burn Question

Hello All,

I bought a used 2012 CMS All4 and it had 68K miles on it when I got it. I changed the oil when I bought just because I did not know when it was last done. I noticed about 100 miles later I had to add more oil. I thought nothing of it cause I may not have added the full 4.5 quarts.

Just before 70K miles the CEL came on again and it was about 3/4 quart low. I added oil and at 70K I changed the oil again. I did this so that I could start a regular 5k oil change schedule. Well the car now has 71k on it and the CEL light came on again. I checked the oil and again it was 3/4 quart low. I filled it once again and the CEL went out.

WTF is up with this car? I mean I took it into the dealership at 70K miles for them to do a complete check of the car, coolant flush and brake line flush. I brought up the adding oil issue and the adviser said turbos burn a little oil but 3/4 a quart is a bit much. He said that they would check it out as part of the complete system check.

I do not see any oil leaks any where. This morning I could smell burnt oil when I got out the car. But with no idea of where the typical oil leak would be on this car, I am not sure where to look.

I am thinking of the following locations:

1. valve cover
2. oil pan
3. oil filter
4. head gasket

Again from what I can see under the car there isn't any place that looks like it is leaking oil. Could the turbo just be bad and burning oil?

thanks
ed

If you're only adding 3/4 quart between changes at 70k miles I would consider you lucky. We've got customers who are taking 5 extra quarts with them after an oil change because they're burning about a quart every thousand miles.

Don't worry about overfilling, add a full 5 quarts every oil change. It's not going to hurt you in the slightest.

I am adding 3/4 a quart every 1000 miles it seems
And worse it showed that it needed 3/4 of a quart so I put it in this morning and CEL went away. On the way home the CEL came on and now the oil shows on the top bob of the dipstick, so it is over filled, but how can that be? I mean seriously it was 3/4 low this morning and now it is over filled? What gives? I hate seeing that CEL come on and the thing saying power reduced.
