Auto Transmission Failure at 63k miles

Has anyone with an All4 had an auto trans failure? Three weeks ago while on the interstate the trans started freewheeling. After coasting it to the shoulder and then coasting down to the next exit, it was towed to Prestige. Trans was unsalvageable and needed replacement. Fortunately, I had the foresight to get extended warranty and after fighting with the warranty company, the service writer got them to agree to a new transmission from MINI and not the salvaged one with 30k miles on it. Nothing in the six pages of warranty contract is the use of salvage parts mentioned.

Well here it is three weeks later and I may be getting the car back today. The first replacement transmission was defective (wouldn't shift higher than second when warm) and the replacement for that came in Saturday.

If I didn't have a loaner I'd be screaming but what for? Sweat the big stuff. Crap happens; and the dealer is only 10 minutes away, so it's not out of my way.

I don't want to say its common but it doesn't surprise me that it failed. You may have had just a weak one that gave up the battle. But also if your original transmission had 63k and you never changed the ATF in it then it is possible that didn't help matters much either. It also sounds like your MINI dealer that installed your second transmission that once warm didn't shift up pass second didn't know what they were doing. That's a clear sign they had the improper level of ATF in it. Hopefully this other transmission they put in will do the trick. But in the future I would recommend ATF changes every 35k. Good luck!

Nope, fluids were changed and oil never went past 5k miles. Car has been maintained.

If you did at least one ATF flush then I would say you just had a weak transmission. Most good transmission shops recommend changes every 30k-35k Lets hope the next one holds up much better!

I had my transmission replaced at 400 miles on my R58. No rhyme or reason.
