Service Light???

This may be a stupid question and maybe I should just pay more attention..

But when we start our cars, does the red car shape with the word service
always show up for a few seconds and then go out?
Or does it mean some kind of service is due?

Only a little past 8k miles on it and I did have the oil changed at 4k, my dime not Mini's...

Thanks for being patient

Just "cranked" it up. Orange MINI shape appears briefly, but no Service.

If it's red you need to get to the bottom of it ASAP.
Silly question, but have you looked it up in your owner's manual?

It sounds like it might be a service overdue warning.
Your OBC should not have been reset when you had the oil changed yourself, so it's as if that never happened as far as your OBC is concerned.
Do you have the receipts from that oil change?
Is your car under warranty?

Is there an exclamation point inside a triangle next to your odometer?
It's kind of subtle, but that means that your OBC has a warning stored in the system, in the R55 anyway.

you can check what kind of service its telling you that you need, check your owners manual on how to do so.

Ok its the red mini car light that briefly displays when the car is started and it says service above it. Both disappear quickly.

The car runs fine and its about a year since I bought it, so its probably the timed service indicator that the shop wants you to come in for inspection. BUT I had the inspection done and the oil by my mechanic, was less expensive for each.

I will call mini on Mon to confirm.

They won't change the oil til 15k, it now has 8.8k miles and I already had it done around 4k. Not letting that break in oil run through my car's veins for 15k.

Thanks for the input... I will let you know what they say

It means you need to have something serviced. Probably should go there. It's not necessarily an oil problem either.
Do check your gas cap for proper seating first.
