Cooling Fan Running On

I've noticed several temperature/thermostat related discussions across the board, so wanted to get a thread going specifically for cooling fan run-on after the engine is shut off.

I have a 2 month old C-man, 2000 miles, and beginning yesterday the fan starts immediately upon starting the engine and runs on for 20 minutes or more after shutdown. The engine is not hot- a 2 mile drive will do it. Service scheduled for Monday, gut tells me it's a thermostat or similar temp-sensor issue.

How often are we seeing thermostat problems?

our dealer was very familiar with the problem. Now that the weather is turning colder here in the North East, it's showing up more.

Our car went from the fan running on high all the time, to stumbling when first started, to not starting at all... in three days.

The thermostat housing fixed it so far for us.

Good Luck

I have a Clubman, but maybe it's the same issue. I could go around the block in 35 degree temp & the fan would stay on in my garage for 20 mins. Dealer replaced the thermostat & problem solved!

I had a really hard start this morning (it was 17 F in New Jersey)- choke would not set correctly and the engine idled at too low a speed for the temperature. This was followed by immediate start of the cooling fan, so the system clearly thinks the engine is hotter than it actually is, so further pointing to a temp sensor. Seems to be an awful lot of these- recall time as mentioned by kunzman & others?

My Clubman started with the engine light coming on. Local guy read the codes & they were all thermostat but said it was ok to drive. I live 3 hrs from dealer so I was waiting for a day I could get away. It got progressively worse until the battery died from the fan running so long. Went to the dealer the next day. Codes were 2937, 2947,CF2D, 3490 & 348E. The invoice says "replaced Map Thermostat."

Same thing happened on my 2011 ALL4. The thermostat was replaced and everything fine again.
