Noise under hood after car is turned off.

Just over 1000 miles on the car.

I have noticed lately that after I turn my 2012 Countryman S off I hear a sound from under the hood, kind of a wirrrring noise. I originally thought it was the fan running but after looking I found it isn't. It seems to be coming in the area around the turbo, maybe just under it. It also makes a "pop" noise a few times whiles it's making this noise.

I would guess it'll do it for about 5 minutes then it'll have a slight click and it quits.

Also, ever since I have had the car it has had a "burning" smell. To me it smells like the smell when you have used your brakes a lot but it seems to do it even when I haven't been braking much. It isn't as bad as it was when I first got it but it's still there.

Any idea what these are? I'm getting no warning lights and the car is running great (knock wood).

The whirring sound is an electric aux water pump running to cool the turbo. The burning smell is normal for a new car especially a turbo that runs pretty hot, some parts are coated with cosmiline at might actually smoke when hot. The popping might be the gas tank "farting", just decompressing after being slightly pressurized after running. All normal, quit looking for issues and just enjoy your car!

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to know it's normal. The popping sound is coming from the turbo area too and is the sound of metal cooling off. I guess aux water pump is doing just what it's supposed to, cooling off the turbo.

I'm not looking for issues and wouldn't think of taking the car in for service for something like this. I figured they were normal but being someone who likes to know how things work I wanted to know what they were.

I love the car, the most fun I have every had with a car.....now my 1969 Camaro I drove in high school was the most fun I have had "in" a car ;-)

I just got through polishing the Mini today....removed all those dealer installed swirls. I found the paint to be rather soft and had to use Menzerna PO85RD and a finishing pad to get the haze out of the paint. But now it's like glass.

Thanks again.

Nice job on the polish.

I was wondering about that noise as well, but I am almost sure our base loaner had the same sound.

Thanks for the confirmation about this noise. I didn't experience it on my 2008 Mini, so I was concerned at first when I heard it on my 2012 MCS after turning off the car. I also noticed that it doesn't occur every time, but mostly when the weather is warmer, or when I've driven longer.
