Ours is in for the 6th time in four months. It has spent over 20 nights in their shop and I didn't get a call today so I would guess this means another night in the shop at least.

My coolant temp sensor-which lives in the thermostat housing-has been replaced 5 times. Most recently a few weeks ago when they put in the NEW RE-RE-RE-RE-REDESIGNED thermostat housing. The difference? The new housing has a coolant temp sensor which can be removed without requiring the entire housing to be replaced. Some fix. I wonder how much longer it will be before the same problem crops up again.

WOW, this is rampant! We just got ours back from the dealership after the engine malfunction light put it limp mode!!! It nearly stranded my wife and kids just blocks from our house.

My wife loves this car but the C-rating in reliability is giving us buyer remorse.

After 5 attempts what is the dealer and/or Mini doing anything for you for all your trouble? What are they telling you? That Mini is searching for a permanent fix? How many miles does your car have on it?

Chiming in with yet another multiple coolant sensor failure. This will be #3.

SA reported a new part number had been installed after the last incident two weeks ago.

Engine stumbled and stalled AS I was backing into the driveway yesterday. Good timing as I JUST finished changing the thermostat on my R53 due to a leak. (Also somewhat ironic because they're completely different engines.)

Previous time was while passing a semi going up one of the Siskyiou passes (200mi from home, 320 from the dealership). Exceptionally dangerous time to fail. Darned lucky that it did not result in a crash.

Add one additional issue with a nasty coolant leak (shortly after temp sensor #1), and it's looking like I'll hit three weeks of downtime in the first year.

I can't imagine that this is good business for them... I estimate that (after today) they will have spent more than $3000 just on towing my car around. Of course, maybe their contract with Allstate (RA provider, iirc) insulates them from some of that.

All the same, if they actually hit 30 days out of service, they will be getting the honor of paying me lots of money to take my car back...

We just took in our '11 Justa 6MT because the cooling fans started coming on at startup on a 32* morning. This is the 2nd time for us, but the first time was almost a year ago and before the revised sensor/location was used.

We also have an oil drip and it is the oil pressure sending unit so that is going to be replaced along with the entire harness.

One man from Byelorussia adviced me that their Mini dealer isn`t replace thermostat, only install additional temperature switch. I don`t know details, I was ask him about it and I am awaiting his feedback. maybe they are return to R56 scheme, where T switch is replacement parts.
If anybody know about this "modification" - please let me know it.
Really big minus to Mini/Bmw that they cannot choose normal thermostat manufacture/supplier(

PS: I hope that my text is understandable, please don`t peeve if you found mistake))

I understand you completely, I was complimenting your English! It's very good.

There's a recall, get in contact with MINI directly and they should tell you how to approach the situation.

I called to my dealer today, they asked that my Mini is awaiting two action:
- replacement of Turbine cooling pump
- replace of engine temperature sensor
(I don`t understang how they will do it, because current modification of the sensor - it is one assy together with thermostat)
I am booked on 2nd Jan.
if you will interest results - I will write it here with pictures of new part installation.
I am really interest the place where will install temperature sensor or how they will replace it in thermostat (they asked that it will sensor replacement , not a thermostat replacement).

Currently I am awaiting my Mini in the dealer service center. They will replace turbine cooling pump and modified temperature sensor (install modified water tube from thermostat with housing for new temperature sensor. T sensor of thermostat will disconnect, its wire will connect to new sensor in tube).
I hope that this modification will fix problem.

Well, it finally happened to me. I got a check engine light last week and pulled the code using my Torque android app.

P0128 - Powertrain
Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)

I dropped the car off at Ralph Schomp Wednesday morning and picked it up that evening. They replaced the Coolant Temperature Sensor, and while they had the hood up, they also replaced the timing chain gasket (under an open campaign), changed my oil and washed the car.

Everything's back to normal now. Lots of power, doesn't stall in the cold, warms up fast, and the fan doesn't stay on for 5 minutes when I turn off the car. It was my first time in the shop, and I'm happy with their service department.

This is interesting! What year is yours? I have had mine into the dealer 5 times now, and have never had them mention this gasket.

Overheating - or maybe not

I have a 2012 CMAll4 (loaded) with 27,350 miles on it. Have never had even 1 issue with this car - it has been great!! This morning as I drove my daughter to school the mini connected app (driving excitement) tells me that my car is overheating. No warning lights appeared on the dash. Drove home and parked in the garage. I Checked the cooling reservoir and it was fine, but the fan ran for quite a while. This afternoon I used the app to check status on a short drive and it warned me that the engine wasn't on (I was going 50 mph at the time, and had only been in the car for about 2 minutes) and that the engine was overheating. Again - no dash lights of any kind coming on, but when I parked in the garage the fan did continue to run for quite a while again. Outside temperature in the 20's and the engine seemed quite cold when I checked it. No way it was overheating. Does this sound like the temperature sensor that everyone is referencing in this thread?

Appears to be. I've read that when the sensor starts to fail it reads too high, so the computer thinks the car is overheating when it is actually cool or within normal limits.

Countryman Thermostat

Reloaded the Mini Connected App last night just in case something was wrong with that. The App still says the car is overheating - even when cold in the garage and the engine not running. This morning the check engine light came on. My code reader says P0128 Coolant Thermostat. Called Mini and they wanted me to bring the CM in immediately. I made arrangements to drop the car off early next week because I live about an hour drive from the dealership and can't get to them until then. Service rep says as long as the check engine light doesn't turn red, and there are no other symptoms, it's OK to drive. I'll drive one of my other vehicles until the trip to Indianapolis, just in case. If it turns red on the way up then I'll get my 1st opportunity at using the roadside assistance. I will say I like the service department at Dreyer-Reinbold Mini as they have been very helpful. . . .

on my 4th thermostat and still going

I must have the worst luck I have a 2009 mini cooper S with 38,000 milies the first time the thermostat went was around 28,000 I bought a new one from the dealer and it lasted 10 months. Car was overheating again I took off the thermostat and it was stuck closed. I brought it to the dealer and there policy is to have the part on the car then they will diagnose it the its covered under the warranty so not wanting the dealer to touch my car I bought a new one. Brand new right out of the box it opened then got stuck open. I had to fight with the dealer to get my money back then ordered one online and it was also stuck open right out of the box So Is it just bad luck or is this something that is coming of the assembly line defective? I love my mini but it has been the most unreliable car i have ever bought, I also replaced the water, pump, and clutch already all the other upgrades I made on my own.

Replaced the coolant thermostat/gasket (for the third time!!) and the adjacent
coolant temp sensor today - it looks like the sensor was more the source of the
slow leak than the thermo gasket this time. Not to hard on an R50 - take out
the airbox, battery, ecu, and battery box and it's easy to get to.

Also, I pumped the coolant out of the resevoir and the thermo housing before
starting, and lost very little coolant doing the job. I refilled via the thermo
housing and milked some air bubbles out of the hoses leading up to it before
putting on the cap and filling the reservoir, so there I didn't have to deal with
the usual prolonged bleeding attempts.
