Quote: When my MA saw my car (6 weeks ago) It was only in one spot. He immediately informed me that all trim pcs will be replaced. (others trim pcs are starting to fail as well - it hit 104 in Houston today)
I'm starting to think it is good that I kept putting off ordering one until the '12's were available..... I hope.

I'm seriously crossing my fingers that the 2012's have somehow avoided getting infected with the dreaded chrome disease too. I can't believe they would send out a new MY without addressing this problem first, but they did it for the 2011's after March so why not?

Well, Zaftig was feeling left out. I did my every other day inspection in the Metro lot today and her L Rear is coming loose. I'm off Monday, so I know where I'll be.

Was that the whole left rear or just one of the chrome strip segments?

Section that goes from rear door around to hatch. Showing white by the door and lifting at the hatch.

So, good news and bad news. I guess all the pre-March trim was from a factory in japan...that got destroyed in the tsunami. After that, they commisioned another company to do the chrome trim from scratch....and they effed it up. They know the problem which is good, but the bad news is that factory in Japan is still unoperable, so even though rumors have been flying around about october good chrome, I doubt it is going to haopen. You can get red or black beltline tape at outmotoring.com in the meantime.

Are the Euro's and Pac NW's having this problem? Is this purely a heat/humidity issue?

Well, it would seem that MINI would have announced this from the beginning but I guess they didn't want to scare off the 2012 purchasers which now I say that have a 100% chance of getting the bad trim that I suspect will all peel sooner or later.

Is it possible that a moderator could move this to the Fixing Problems and Issues section where it belongs, maybe even merge it with the thread there.

I'm in the pac NW, I've got a 3/11 build with no issues so far, but it has been a cool summer, maybe I got some of the last good chrome? Maybe its the weather. So far so good. Anybody out here with a 4/11 or later?

The PNW summer of 2011 has been the coolest I can recall. Seattle has barely reached 80 degrees only twice so far. (Including yesterday) I have a Feb build with no problems on the trim either.

Not much to report from my talk with Passport Service this morning. They're not doing any replacements until they hear from HQ. Do it once, do it right. Did, kind of, admit that the initial plan of just putting new ones on was not the brightest move. They said MINI would probably send out letters once they have a permanent solution. Nothing to do right now but wait.

I went to my dealer today, and they now do admit there is a problem. They said there will be a full replacement of all the trim pieces with a new part number. One month is the estimated date, and my MA will give me a call a week or so before to get my car scheduled for the replcement. I'm HOPING this isn't a run around, because the story is the same one others were given about a month ago. Maybe next month the story will be the parts will be available in a month, so come back then.

We'll see... at least they admitted there was a problem.

I pulled off the peeling chrome today and recovered it in black again. No surprise to me but it came off in one piece so easy not leaving any residue. Took me a few minutes to fix it..

A photo of how it turned out would be great as I am thinkning of blacking out mine(even though I do not have the peeling issue). Then the only chrome left would be the door handles.

First, is the dealer/MA cool with this? Will it void the warrantly if you peel the affected chrome area and, those areas that aren't peeling yet??

If not, what kind of tape is it?

So much for moving to the PNW as a solution. After a few days of warm (85 degree) weather and my CM sitting in a parking lot baking my hood chrome strip is shrinking on both ends. I'd assume the next step is peeling so I called up the service department to have them take a look at it on Friday.
The person I spoke to hadn't ever heard of this issue either, so I guess I'll be the one breaking them in.
Fortunately or not I'll be out of town for 2 weeks so I won't have to drive around with peeling chrome before parts hopefully get in.

Just called mini of allentown to follow up with the trim that was "ordered" a month and a 1/2 ago for my car. They said I am on the lengthy list of people that have this problem, and "everyone seems to be having this issue." Other than that they are simply still waiting for Mini to do something about it...

Here ya go.. Door handles are done too...

Boca, I told my dealer I did it and he didn't seem to care. I may not even get my pieces fixed. It will just cost me to black them out again.. And again, it's just black out tape from Pep boys. $7 a roll, takes a roll and a half.
