I picked up my car a week ago and the chrome trim on the rear liftgate has already started peeling. Not only that, but the chrome tape they used doesn't even cover the ends completely! I want it all replaced.

Winnie has the onset of Chrome Disease as well. The ends of the trim on the boot are sarting to show beige underneath, meaning the chrome tape is receding. It won't be long before it stars to peel. Mini Better get busy o this.

I just discovered it today on mine. I picked it up from Prestige 12 days ago.

How are those trim pieces attached to the car?

Husband's CMS completed production on Feb 25 and there's no sign of peeling trim, and his vehicle sits out in the Texas heat and sun. We're thanking our lucky stars it's not happening to his vehicle but sorry about the problem for everyone else.

I just wanted to say how much I appreciate everybody's updates. I haven't seen any peel on mine yet, but I'm really glad to have updated info if anything happens.

tippykayak,

Didn't you originally order a CM about the end of April, and then end up buying one off the lot at a different dealer? I seem to remember this because you ordered yours the same day I ordered mine. Do you have any idea what build date your car is? It looks like you may have got lucky in getting one off the lot if it was built before mid March. So far, I haven't heard of one failure before March build date.

I did. I can't for the life of me figure out the build date. There's a dealer invoice for it from 3/11, so my guess is that it was built just before that at least, but is there a better way to know the build date for sure?

I pick up my Crystal Silver ALL4 tomorrow. It was a dealer transfer, so I have no clue when the MFG date is/was. I will be checking the trim on delivery.

there's a plate in the frame of the drivers door that has the month and year, but not the exact date

Thanks. It's 3/11. The production invoice is dated March 11th. So I may be in that early March camp. I just checked every inch of the trim, though, and it looks perfect, so I've still got my fingers crossed that I dodged the bullet.

I do have a pretty significant sunroof rattle, though, so I need to go in anyway.

Look for the sunroof rattle thread. Apprarently you can take out some little plastic piece and the noise goes away. Not sure if that is your issue, but it seemed to work for a bunch of folks. I will be looking into that when I get mine in...hopefully September.

Just talked to my MA, apparently parts are set to arrive in Germany on august 16. He said to expect delivery to US about 3 weeks after that. I'm not waiting ANOTHER month for these parts. Black out trim here I come!

Are these dates for the redesigned parts or just a batch of current design replacement parts?

One of the other things that sucks about this, is all my friends want to check out our NEW car and when they see they LOVE it! Then, they say, "hey what's going on here?" I have to go through the whole chrome tape/heat explanation. Most are like "wow, that totally sucks" and are surprised when they see its tape.

Overall, this cannot be helping MINI's image. Plus, it kinda steals all the fun of showing off your new ride when its new.

You should send this to Mini headquarters. In fact, Mini should have an employee whose full time job it is to monitor these forums. They are a goldmine of information about how to improve their products.

It is sad that this defect has been around since March, it is now mid-August, and nothing has been established as a permanent fix. Yes, some people have 'heard from their dealer' about a fix being worked on in Germany. But everything I read mentions vague terms with no concrete plans on what they are actually going to do. Does anyone know exactly what MINI is going to do? Are they going to redesign the trim, and let everyone know when it is available? Or are they going to simply get enough new pieces in the pipeline to satisfy everyone until the warranty runs out?
I'm going to visit my dealer tonight to discuss. If you recall, they weren't a bit concerned a month ago when I first showed the issue to them. At the time, they said, 'wait a month and get back to us'. We'll see what their response is now. I bet it will be to offer to replace the trim, as it fails, with more of the same...

Add me to the list. I noticed that most of the trim pieces have either shifted or started falling off the car this past weekend.

When I contacted Ask Mini about this issue they claimed they hadn't heard of this issue from anyone else and that this was the first they have heard of it. Seems like Mini is trying to make everyone believe they are the only ones seeing this problem.

My Mini dealer still acts completely ignorant of this issue also. I had all parts replaced and a week later the one below front windshield is completely pulled up and many of the others are shrinking or shifting.
