OEM Turbo Heat Shield Cover

I am trying to install a DP myself and reading the instructions it would seem very easy, but as always it's the small things that trip you up...

So my current dilemma is reaching two bolts on the OEM heat shield. They are located in the front (near the radiator fan) and there is hardly enough clearance for a socket. I can put a socket on them but I get 1/100 of a turn because of the lack of clearance. Since my hands are not going to get any smaller any ideas? Does the radiator need to come out? Is there a special tool? The instructions (akrapovic, alta, etc) are not much help since they only say to "unbolt the shield" without saying how...

Picture attached showing the location of the two problem bolts in red circles.

New to the CM. My Clubbie ate 7 hood scoops in the 5 years I had her. I never put a heat shield on since mini kept replacing them for free.

Does the hood have issues from the heat on the CM?

I don't think so, but I do have a VIP heat shield. And I am not adding or replacing the OEM shield, but rather the downpipe...need to remove the OEM shield first though to detach the pipe.

It's a huge pain getting that thing off and replacing the DP. A lot of people put their cars in "service mode" when replacing the down pipe, meaning removing the front bumper cover to get easier access to the front of the engine.

I tried to take off my DP too and eventually had to take it to someone.

Success! I used a flexible ratchet extension to reach the tough ones. I also removed the cover completely and I am thinking that with the VIP heat shield I do not need to put the OEM back on...am I wrong?
