R59 195/55R16 runflat noise...Hankook H426 experience?
195/55R16 runflat noise...Hankook H426 experience?
Looking for suggestions on the quietest runflats available in a 195/55R16? What about the Hankook Optimo H426 runflat? Tirerack has zero reviews on the Hankook runflat so I'm hesitant to make the purchase. This is my wife's car. I tried to sell her on the idea of switching to conventional tires with a bottle of slime and 12v air compressor, but she wants to stay with runflats having experienced two flats since 2014 (roofing nails). Her car is a 2013 R59 base Mini that just hit 30K miles. The original Continental's are due for replacement before the winter snow arrives. All-season tires are required. Any suggestions on an all-season quiet runflat?
Thanks,
Matt

Thanks, I looked at that tire, but after reading some reviews at tirerack that were highly critical of the noise I had second thoughts. One guy said they were the noisiest tires he'd ever had. Glad to know your experience has been good. Her car being an uninsulated convertible is noisy at highway speeds anyway and we don't want to make it any worse. City driving she would never notice. Around town she rarely ever gets the car up to enough speed to engage the spoiler. I took a second look at the reviews and they are all over the board so will probably give them a try.
Time for a new battery and a coolant change. I've done two oil/filter changes and bled the brake lines of the old fluid. Also replaced a failed coil pack (and the other 3) before learning Mini had extended the warranty. Contrary to other's experiences it has been a good car for us.

it is an old review but has some interesting facts I've not read elsewhere.
I've had some LOUD tires ... and these are NOTHING EVEN CLOSE ..... yet
I did 100 miles today on interstate (took Mrs car in for service .. 15 S) and road noise from tires was ZIP IMO. Of course, road noise usually develops over time as the tires wear . . .

My 2012 Cooper S came with the 195/55-16 Continental RFTs. I switched to a non-RFT Bridgestone AS tire. After a while the Bridgestones became noisy and just plain didn’t work well. I went back to the Continentals and been happy ever since. They have served me well in the dry, wet and snow.
I recently picked up a 2019 JCW, which has those Hankook RFTs on it (205/45-17) . They ride nice, have low noise and work OK in the dry. In heavy rain - not so good. Have not had them in the snow and likely they will not. I would not expect them to be any good, given how poor they are in the rain. I should note that the tires that I have are the H426 HRS which don’t appear on TR. TR has a H426B HRS, but the tread pattern looks the same so I would not expect results to be different. When these go, I will will replace them with something else for the JCW.
As for the 2012 Cooper S, I will probably keep an eye out in the the NAM marketplace for someone’s Continental cast-offs. I am getting close to the wear bars now and they will need to be replace. The best thing I did for the RFT tires was to replace the crap-tastic MINI shocks with Bilstiens. What a great improvement.
Oh, and for the winter, I went to RFT snow tires on the S. Orders of magnitude better than any AS tire I have ever used. Again, NAM marketplace for used MINI wheels with sensors.
Hope this helps.
