Now, I do like to be different... And , I don't think the roadster is ugly ( I actually really like the look ..) The middle part, though, really bothers me... I do feel that the mini is overpriced , just like all BMWs and derivatives... But , an INFERIOR PRODUCT!!!! What up with that ? In other words , you are paying more for a piece of crap! A UK edition , too..
BTW: loves the MX5, Miata... "One of the best two seat convertibles out there... "
The Miata consistently gets these types of accolades , and always beats the mini in a comparison test... ( too small - no space , not winter friendly = limited utility)... In my opinion...

 

I dont watch Top Gear because it seems to me they are biased to certain vehicles and in a weird way. I sometimes wonder if they are turning into a paid info mercial with the car being touted as the greatest whatever as being the paid advertiser. I remember a few magazines back in the day that did this as well. A ZL1 camaro gets smoked by a Shelby 500 yet in a comparison beats it because its just more powerful? how is it when its not as fast in quickness or top end? I say get what you want as they say in Buddhism " Know by own self and not others or become victim to their own personal feelings and leanings".

 

There are a number of people in the print media that think liking the look of any Mini means that you are a Mini kool aid drinker. My favorite car magizine is Road & Track. They are clearly fans of both Porsche and BMW and I understand why. Not inexpensive cars but they are typically head and shoulders above the competition when it comes to driving experience. As you likely know, they ranked the Mini Roadster 3rd out of the top 20 convertibles made today. If you added a price sensitivity factor, I am sure that it would have been number 1.

Were you able to test drive the Roadster S?

 

It's not like Top Gear hasn't said good things about Mini's in the past. Most people buying a 2 seat convertible sports car are doing it for the driving experience. The Miata is the better drivers car. Doesn't mean the Mini is a bad car, but it is far more expensive than the Miata, especially with some options.

Just remember though that most of the time, reviews tend to lend themselves more to the enthusiast, without taking into account which might do better in the winter or have a roomier cockpit.

Positive comments were made about other mini models .... You are right about the winter and more room. A Mazda salesman told me that with special wheels and tires , I would be able to drive in the winter ... I bet ...
