Samakhan's R58 build thread

Hi All,

I recently joined NAM as a member however I've lurked NAM for info in the past and have felt this forum is a great source and a great community. With social media these days, forums tend to get left behind in my opinion. I figured it would be fun to start an old school build thread on a forum.

Some background on me:
I am based in Milwaukee, WI...any locals in the area??
I've always been a car enthusiast and have played around with many different platforms from DSMs, Hondas, VWs, etc.
I also have a 1st generation Miata that I've extensively modified with a Honda Kswap/Rotrex. My current daily's are a 2016 GMC 2500 diesel and soon to be 2013 R58 S.

I currently own 3 Minis.
A 2005 R53 S that is tore apart in my garage while I slowly piece together Kswap components. Long-term project that I plan to make awd with a magnuson TVS1900 supercharger.
A 2011 R56 S that was my daily that recently was rear-ended by someone with no insurance. I stockpiled a ton of parts for this car but unfortunately I believe I will be parting it out.
A 2013 R58 S I recently picked up from an insurance auction for next to nothing. This build thread will be dedicated to this car. All the parts I've been hoarding for my 2011 R56 are currently going on this car.

The goal for this R58 is to be a fun street daily with an occasional time attack session here and there.

Below is a list of parts that are getting installed. Let me know if I should consider anything else while I'm in full mod mode

leaning towards Toyo R888r 245/45R16 but not positive if I'd enjoy them as daily tires

9/20 the day I picked it up from the auction lot in St. Louis, IL. $2880+fees 🤩 Auction stated, “engine damage, non-running.”

Parked outside my friends shop to begin diagnostics. Found ground strap was not connected. Once secured, charged battery and it fired right up. Sitting at 112k miles

Drove it to work the next day as a shake down to see if any other issues would arise. No problems 👍🏽

Tear down begins for more powwahhh baby

Beauty shot

All typical maintenance performed. Timing chain, water pump, walnut blast, thermostat, gaskets, etc.

Rear beauty shot

Rolled outside with the custom heat wrapped DP poking out while we tear down the R56

Red and blue…maybe I need a white one now 🤣

MFactory helical differential install was a bit of a pita.

Trans case would not go back together with the diff installed

The upper diameter was slightly too large to the point it was making contact with the trans case.

Visible scoring from the diff inside the trans.

As much as I hated having to do this, the only way we were going to get the diff to fit was to carve out the inside of the trans housing. I’d say around 2-3mm was removed from the area that is died pink. Trans closed up and back in the car.
