How does the smart alternator system work?

I had a problem with the battery warning light coming on after not driving for about a week.

I drove the car to a shop to check the battery and charging system, and they both passed the test. Then I read about the smart alternator in some cars are designed to keep the AGM battery around 80% charged. I was usually doing short drives mostly during the day, then leaving the car in our garage for about a week.

After reading that the smart alternator may change its charging voltage depending on the electrical load, I am trying to do all my short drives with the headlights on.

So far I have not had the battery warning light come on any more.

Does the R58 have a smart alternator?

I have the IBS system with that current sensor. My car was originally fitted with a Gel Glass Mat battery but when I bought it it was fitted with a normal lead acid battery. I have a Carly adapter and after fitting you are meant to reset the system for the battery capacity and type. This apparently optimises the charge and minimises the alternator load
