Here are a few pictures of the installed options of the Blackvue and hidden radar detector. Note the radar is mounted in the ashtray. The Blackvue is behind the mirror and if you look in the mirror you can see the rear unit in the back window.
A few more pictures
Better pictures of the radar in ashtray, note film not yet removed from face. Amateur radio is next to console on a gooseneck device that is mounted under passenger seat post. The black box above the gas peddle is the Magic Power Pro. Turns off Blackvue when battery drains to a specified level. Works in parking mode to record movement around the car front and rear. The ashtray is a Mini Ashtray and open has a nice flat surface that with some velcro the unit head sticks to perfectly.
Antenna
Here is the antenna for the radar detector. Mounted in the back between the seats. Straight shot out the front windshield. I did not want to risk a low mount near the bottom of the front spoiler. I need to add some rubber feet on the rear for a permanent install. A little velcro holds the front in place. All the parts to the radar can be moved easily if there is a problem. Unit is the 8500CI Escort. I did not need the Plus unit. And at eye level it really is a straight shot out the windshield.
Install
Yes, myself.
I have done some rather extensive installs with Amateur Radio, besides building kit radios I have installed them with a huge Screwdriver Antenna on the back.
My goal with my installs is to not drill any holes. If I remove anything you would not know it had been there. Not always easy.
I had to stick the Dash Cams on the glass and used what came with them. I could remove them and buy more sticky squares from Blackvue. The hidden radar has a voice box that is high up beside the gas peddle. Hard to see but easy to hear. I used a piece of Velcro to keep it in place.
I picked up a few plastic feet. They stick on things and you get them at Home Depot like pads to put under furniture. I need a little something like black squares to put under the antenna in the center to level it.
The Amateur Radio Head unit is on a gooseneck device that is made for GPS units I got off Amazon. Works very well with multiple holes in back for anything. I did need to buy a Torx set to loosen the seat as it clips under the seat on the passenger side. The seat rail.
I spent hours looking for a place to mount the radar display. Was thinking either high over the light that says passenger air bag off above rear view mirror but then notice that flat spot in the Mini Ashtray that actually came with my wife's Countryman. The ashtray flat spot was perfect, but with any install don't make anything permanent until some drive time to make sure you like it and move things around if needed.
The Blackvue surprised me. It has its own built in Wifi. So from my iTouch I press a button and link to its Wifi and download videos on the spot. Wave my hand on the left hand side of the mirror to turn audio recording off as recording both take more space, "But please turn it on if stopped by police to record all audio"!
So I was driving today with my wife in the Countryman. At a light I swear a car was so close at the red light there might have been 3 inches from the bumper. I said to her do you think he is too close? Then at another light I said the car behind looks like the correct distance do you agree? Point? I am going to do a similar install on her Countryman. Blackvue and add a hitch for a Super Bumper.
Many would call me a bit paranoid. I can't tell you how many hit and run accidents I have been in, been hit by drunks, you name it. Police have been total incompetent in all aspects. So yes, paranoid. Blackvue is a great way to record evidence even while parked. Super Bumper should work but I feel just as comfortable with a hitch of any sort. It will keep me out of the body shop and rental car. Like I said, I have been in so many accidents. I just call my attorney and let him handle it. I am pro attorney as I work 11 hour days and I really don't have the time for another full time job and dealing with an accident and insurance companies is another full time job. I have been pleased with past settlements.
The radar install took about 45 minutes. The Blackvue install about 1 1/2 hours. the hardest part was pressing the wires between the windshield and molding with a credit card.
Blackvue hooks up to the Magic Power Pro box above the gas peddle. Its purpose with the flip switches is to cut power when the battery reaches a certain level so you don't come back to a dead car battery as it will record movement and audio if triggered when your car is parked. You set all this up on your iTouch or iPhone or other device. And you can set time limits as well, 12, 24, 36 hours to forever.
Thinking of getting a Clore battery self jump starter just in case but no problems yet. But I like the idea I could carry something to self jump start my car if needed.
Patience and the right tools these are not hard to install. I tapped into the fuse box on the passenger side. Used a multi-meter to find which fuses are always hot and which ones cut off. Just wrapped the wire around the fuse and put them back in. No fancy adapters. Trial and error but it works. Blackvue works when car is off. The radar comes on when I start the car and shuts off when I turn the car off. Simple.
To run wires from the drivers side to the passenger side use a coat hanger. Unwrap it. Make it straight, fish it through under the dash from the passenger side. Feel it with your fingers to pull it through to the drivers side. Use electrical tape to tape wires to it and pull it back through. Many use what is called fish tape for this move. Fish tape is what Pro Installs use, could not find mine and it worked fine.
All wires neatly tucked in center console or around molding. Looks great from all aspects of car.
