Hi folks. peterhell's found out some interesting facts about recent oil pumps and/or solenoids. His details are confirmed from RealOEM.com and are attached in the thumbnail below. Why so many changes of part number, I wonder? (Because they leak?)
I'm rechecking my 'fix/enhancement' tomorrow; thanks peterhell
ps NewCooperFantastic, that oil leak didn't throw up any codes in mine...

Just took my coupe which has 19,000 miles in for an oil change today figuring I'd be in and out. Service manager told me my car has the beginning of this problem and is going to repair it but won't have the harness til Monday So I will driving a regular cooper for a few days...is it just me or do others feel kind of dorky coming out of your coupe to drive a R56?

I am not happy, got my car back and for past 150 miles smelling burning oil and getting drips under car! I think it's from a sloppy oil change, not what one would expect from a ray catena dealership.

The same thing happened to me. I went back to have them button up the car.

For one service they completely left the Vband off the DP......they've been slipping lately.

At least the issue was fixed !

Can someone please tell me how I can determine wich engine I have on my 2012 JCW Coupe.
How can I tell if it is a n14 or n18 engine?

The N18 engine was used in the UK from
September 2010 in the Cooper S LCI
at worst the USA should have been start 2011.
The easiest way to tell is there is a cover over
the spark plugs that the N14 doesn't have.
Correct answer to question below

Sorry to correct you Peter but that's wrong - the N18 wasn't used in the JCW until late September 2012.. Not even the first 2013MY JCWs had it.

Cooper S LCI has had it since September 2010..

If you turn the sport button on the new N18 will pop like crazy while old N14 usually pops once every 5-10 minutes..

N14 - used until Sept 2012

N18 - used from Sept 2012 (engine cover is the big giveaway)

N18 in the JCW line didn't come out until 2013 model year.

Just had the same problem on my 2012 Cooper S Coupe (production November 2011). 24,000 km.

Had selonoid valve replaced as well as engine wiring harness and a couple other parts. Found the issue only when going in for an oil change. Took 3 days in the shop (including ordering parts). Had fun driving the Paceman in the mean time!

Maybe should move this thread as it isn't unique to the Coupe.

My 2013 Cooper S roadster (N18) went in today and thanks to this thread I got them to check it - confirmed leak, solenoid valve..

So is there a "factory level" fix for this, or is it still being addressed at the dealer level only? My Coupe is on route and just wanted to know if it's something I need to look out for?

Indeed. I think this is a problem with the N18 engine and has nothing to do with the body. I noticed a fresh drop of oil in the garage this morning and put the Clubman up on stands to take a look.

I just visually confirmed that I also have a leaky sensor and the situation looks exactly like the picture in this thread.

Will be making a call to the dealer monday. This type of leak is unacceptable to me for a 2013 with only 20k miles on the odometer......

Yes, this production issue still has not been fixed by MINI for whatever reason.

I'm in a Countryman S as well and the wagon is at the dealership. I also told them to check the "squeal" from the passenger side of the engine when I shut the engine off. It is also a known problem with the N18. Its said to be the water pump bearing....I have not seen whether it will lead to a leaky or failed pump, but have read that some dealerships are replacing them.

My concern about the oil wicking problem is that it will come back unless there is a new procedure for installation or an improvement of the gasket, which doesn't seem to be the case since this problem has been ongoing for at least 4 years.

I have this problem as well, 2013 roadster. I would love to just buy the parts and fix it myself. Don't have time to go to the dealer and if a hundred bucks or so, would fix it I'm ok with that. Reading that it is some how tied to the DME has me worried. Also does anyone know if I can buy these parts and fix it myself?. OK looked up the parts and it looks like a SOLV 11417647238 , loctite 5970 , ISA screw 07139905152. All parts come to about $140.00

Had mine replaced today on my 2012 Mini S (Production completed 9/07/11). I went in to have my tires rotated and the dealership found the leak. While there's no recall for this repair, the dealer said it was on a bulletin and that they have replaced the part on quite a few Minis. They had the parts in stock, so that should tell you something. I had no idea of the leak and have not seen any drops, etc.

My car has made the shut-down squeak for some time now. I'm not so sure its abnormal? I've read on other threads that replacing the pump does not fix it, and the noise comes back after a few days/weeks. -

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...dio-video.html

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...xperience.html

IMHO (knocks on wood), the shutdown noise is normal - but a constant noise while running (weeeeeeeeeee) is not.

As for the oil solenoid leak -

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...49&hg=11&fg=30

The new part number is - 11417645836 for the seal -

NHTSA: Action Number: 10044680 Service Bulletin Number: 336414 / #SIM-11-01-12

Report Date:
Jan 01, 2014Component:
(pws)
Summary: Mini: on certain model vehicles, an engine oil leak may occur, due to the compromised oil pump volume control solenoid valve, from the underside of engine. No model years listed. *pe updated 4/19/2013. *kb updated 3/11/14.

lots of other threads - this effects all n14(?)/n18 models made up until 4/19/2013(?)

IMHO, if your car is out of warty - I would personally cut the harness and install a connection point that allows the oil to leak out. This won't prevent the leak, but would prevent the oil from getting pumped into the DME/ECU.

Lots of threads here too..

BTW - You can clearly see if your unit is leaking. The wire harness is right behind the oil pan on the passenger side. Get under the car and have a look.

Oh, and I'll add that I don't think the o-ring will fix anything. If oil is getting injected into the wire harness the issue is internal to the solenoid, all that o-ring does is fix an external leak between the engine and the solenoid. I believe oil is getting pressurized and sent inside the solenoid. The oil then travels inside the body, and is ejected out through the harness, pumped up to the DME.
