Plastic fitting on roof came loose?

First of all I apologize for my english. Im not a native and technical things are a little hard for me to explain properly. Im sure Ill mess up my description of the problem. Please, bare with me :)

So I just got my first mini ever. A used ( But in great condition) cooper s cabrio from 2009.
The car runs great. It used to belong to my Gf parents so I know the history of the car. All looks like new!

There is a plastic fitting, or piece, that runs from side to side on the roof, just above the front seats. I hope you guys know the one I mean, If not, I can upload a pic :)

This piece Is a little loose on top of the drivers seat, so It kinda "hangs" a little lower. I can "click" it in if I apply a little pressure but it falls right out within seconds.

I try to do as much research as possible before I buy something and I read some horror stories about the roof failing and want to prevent it as much as possible.

Should I take the mini to the dealer and let them deal with it? , or is this something I can do at home with whatever tools I have?

Thanks for the advice guys!

Best regards, gilberto :)

SO I though Id add a picture or two of the piece I mean to make it easier :)
Id also like to introduce you guys to my new lady, super stoked with her!
2009 Cabrio S with all the bells and whistles. Love her to bits :)

You should be able to snap the old one out and new one in.

Get some trim tools to help you , which are great to have for any trim/.

I had the same problem with my trim piece as well (mainly the drivers side). You don't need to replace the entire part, just the plastic retainers that hold the trim in place (two had broken). Also, the part that ECS posted is incorrect. It's not ECS' fault but an error in the Mini diagram. I ordered that same part and it was not even close to what I needed. Pull the trim piece off, replace retainers, snap trim piece back in place. No trim tools needed. This is what you need.

Yea i believe there are built in clips at the each end if I remember right on top of those clips above, but if the base on the main part where the nylon clips into is busted then you have to get the whole piece. If only the clips then see below.

Thanks for bringing up the clips, they are not on the diagram , but there are here:

http://c1552172.r72.cf0.rackcdn.com/334281_x600.jpg

They have the little soft foam ring on them not for vibration noises as it used on interior door panels and trim and people don't want that noise.

Hey! Down in the Rosenheim area?

I lived by the Perlacher Forst (Munich) for a few years, among other places... Great area there in Bavaria, Gal?

Motor on!

Hi. My two plastic sides along the roof are loose now. The attachments holding them onto the sides have broken off (likely due to the heat). I can't seem to find the parts for the sides. I can see below post about the overhead center trim tray, but I can't seem to find the parts for the sides on ECS Tuning. If anyone could direct me to the right place to buy that will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hello,

Those are for the hardtop, what year do you have, or better yet what does your model look like? This is a convertible Gen 2 thread ?

Hi ECS

Thank u for replying my question. My model is 2009 MCS convertible R57.

ECSTuning 12-28-2015 05:31 AM

Hello,

Is it #8 or #7 of the trim. 8 is the top section, 7 is the side . Both on the inside of the top. But exposed when in sunroof mode,.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=54_0407

genekwek 12-28-2015 02:48 PM

I think it's #7. I have attached photos. Can you confirm if its #7 or #8? How can I buy it? I live in Melbourne, Australia so need them shipped to Australia.

Thanks ECS!

**edit.... sorry can't seem to post photos. I'm not sure why..... anyway. I think it's #7 (I need both right and left sides). May I know where can I buy those? Thank you!!!

ECSTuning 12-29-2015 05:29 AM

Yea, Those are the ( #7) long inside upper trims of the convertible top. Black plastic and much longer then the very top trim #8. The slide and clip in towards the rear and held in the front with a small screw. Facing forward in the MINI. Left and then the right side. I dont have pics yet, but that's what they are.

You can see half of the very back side to the side of that seat, connects close to (Look below VVVVVV) that cross brace plastic that goes across the overhead.

Welcome. :)

Ronin1 04-10-2016 02:18 PM

There is also a parts kit for the top bow. #54342758517. There is a lot of hardware you wont use but this will have the small "U" clips and the screws for them. These are accessible when the top is halfway down from outside the car. I also trimmed about 1/4" off of the front of the front edge of the plastic so the top doesn't try to "push" it down when its rolled back. You have to put the "U" clips on the top bow first with the threaded side towards the inside of the car and install the screws thru the outside. Do not over-tighten, there is only about one and a half threads available.

My top bow now fits perfectly, does not rattle and does not move when dropping the top.

ECSTuning 04-11-2016 12:08 PM

What does https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/54342758517/ come with ?

Parts Kit

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...073e2626dd.jpg

This is the kit minus the two clips and the two machine screws that go with them. The screws are easy to pick out from the bunch, they are the only ones with blue sealant on them.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...185750016e.jpg

This is one of the old clips.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...82805bc3b7.jpg

This is the fastener looking from outside with the top halfway retracted. If you remove the center plastic piece without removing these first you will break it.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...eced527440.jpg

I trimmed this edge of the plastic so the moon roof portion doesn't try to push the plastic down.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...12fc1f4392.jpg

Nice fit now and NOTHING moves when driving or dropping or putting up the top.

:) This proved the answer to my Mini in England. I went to the dealership to buy the plastic retainers, thought best buy from dealers, sorry Sir you need to buy whole cowling piece £220 plus fitting! I bought the retainers online for £11.00 - job done! thanks for your suggestion.

ECSTuning 08-15-2017 07:46 AM

thanks for the update. Did you get the clips in post #5?

Hi.
I am having the same trouble with my 2011 Mini.
Can you tell me what part you bought and where you bought it from please? My roof panel fell off and the local BMW dealer where I bought the Mini from quoted me £274.70p to replace it :(

Thanks for this info. We too were directed by the dealership to order an entire new center panel.

I'm ordering the trim panel clips for the center panel. Do those also work for the side panels? I'm having a hard time following this thread and understanding what all to order. I have a 2009 Mini Cooper Converetible (non S) Manual 6 speed.

Thanks!

Drivers side looking in ...now the trim is hanging down a bit :(
Hello guys...new here! 2012 Mini Cooper S convertible.....just bought this car used and yesterday went to put the top up and heard a “pop” and the middle trim piece is now hanging a little low....it was hanging way down, but I was able to push it back up.

I took a photo of what looks like where a screw goes, but I can’t make heads or tails of what exactly I need!

Ive read this entire thread...but no idea what I need to purchase!

Can anyone look at the photos photos and help me?
Thank you in advance!

Scudder44 04-15-2019 07:20 AM

OK, so if you are sure it is an R57, I have looked at realoem and part 21 or 22 are your only bet. Compare with the other one and see which one it is. I am nowhere near my car until Friday so I can have a look the but I have no recollection of seeing that spring on mine and I have replaced the fabric so would have seen it.

Good luck.

Same issue, unsure if I need a new motor cover or clips

Hi,
From the other posts in the thread and some observations myself I know that the clip on the end of part 7 from the diagram is still intact on my car but the plastic motor cover piece still cannot clip on. I’m now wondering if I need the small clips that people have mentioned to clip it back on somehow or if I need a full new motor cover.
any help would be appreciated :)

ECSTuning 11-19-2020 10:15 AM

You would have to take the cover off and see if the clips are ok. If not order up. If something broke and the clip will not hold in place you will need to get the full piece.

R57 Right Center Cover replacement

On my 2010 R57, the Right Center Cover (part number 54-34-2-758-090-BOE) broke. I have the replacement, which has a metal clip on the thicker end. The thinner end goes in under the headliner into the rear pillar. How can I open up the area (lift the headliner) to access the attachment point and what kind of attachment is used inside the “pillar” ( screw, etc). Thanks in advance.

Did you ever find ou to remove covering? I have the same question and issue.

No. Ended up with other problems with top that need a shop to fix.

part hanging down

I have a part that looks different than those shown here and I can't seem to find it on any diagrams. It is on the passenger (right) side behind the trim tray. I have attached a few photos - anyone know what part this is? Part #? Can I find a replacement or will the dealer try to replace the entire panel?

Thanks,

Thanks - I should have looked at the picture more closely before buying the part. The metal clip pulled off the part and was stuck in the top. I removed it with needle nosed pliers and slid it back into the bottom part and was able to reinsert it without even removing the part. Fortunately, the part was not very expensive!

Ok, this threat is one of the main reasons for me joining this forum. We've got a few trim pieces that had previously been glued back in place. But glue eventually fails so I've got a clanging piece of plastic in my ear when I'm driving... slightly annoying!

The parts are mentioned literally in the posts just above this one. I've got new ones and I'm ready to get them in place but I cannot for the life of me understand how the inner canvas panels in the R57 detach so provide access. Am I correct looking at the rivets holding the fabric in place to the frames or is there something that can be undone more easily?

Hoping to get this sorted this weekend whilst the back seats and door panels are off so we only have to take the car off the road for a few days.

Any help, massively appreciated. Searched all over the internet but to no avail!
