Where did the term "R57" come from?

Thanks for the R57 info!

Appreciate the link to the "R" info...I had an idea that the numbers were somehow connected to concept/development, etc. I had a 1st generation 96 Miata which was referred to as an "NA" so I am aware of the 'codes'...I love my R57!
