I used to own an '01 S4. I'm currently researching getting an '08 MCS. Here's the thing. No official announcement has been made yet but I've read several places, that BMW is set to offer AWD as an option starting in '08. Now that's by no means a sure thing but it was a pretty reputable german auto magazine that had the story, I believe in Feb '07. You can Google it if you'd like and read for yourself. So I'm holding out hope that that will be the case. If it does, I'm definitely getting one. It will be my daily commuter and I know I would love it.

That being said, there have been too many times to count, even though it's been probably 5 years since I've owned the S4, that I've regretted getting rid of it. It doesn't handle the best (dated platform), doesn't get the best gas mileage, or is kind on the wallet (repairs). But I have to say that S4 was a sweet, sweet ride. I absolutely loved the interior, the sneaky fast twin turbo and of course the awd of the S4.

It's a tough decision. Please keep us posted on your decision.

To most folks an S4 looks like an A4. And .. some Volkswagons are being designed to look as much like an A4 as possible (VW owns them both). In other words your S4 looks common (as did my A4s in prior years).

If you'd like to have a car where women of all ages will come up to you and comment on it, guys in their teens and 20s make statements that amount to, "cool car", and the guy in the pickup stops and compliments you on your choice of vehicles, (everyone seems to like it) you may want to consider the MCS. I'm saying this because this car is a blast to drive (as is the S4) but it has that added attraction that bolsters your ego on almost a daily basis.

So .. If you're willing to give up some of the practical aspects of the S4 for a car that's fun to drive in virtually every way immaginable, has the added benefit of the unique design that stands out for all to appreciate, and .. creates the situation where people start treating you even more as if you're something special, I'd recommend the MCS.

In other words, if you're the type of person who likes a great driving experience but would rather, "blend in" maybe the S4 is best, but if you'd like to own a car that has true character, is also a blast to drive, and gains lots of attention, the MCS is probably the car for you.

P.S. Improtant caveat .. Every one of those unsolicited positive comments for me have come when my MCS was sparkling clean and shiney (extra attention to the wheels is a must). If you're not into keeping your car clean chances are you won't experience those ego building comments any more frequently than you do with your S4 after it's recently been washed and waxed.

If you're looking for a "premium" small-car, the Mini Cooper S is what you want.

I'll agree that it draws attention, but maybe the reactions are different in different parts of the country. Most girls react to the car by saying how "cute" it is, to which I immediately say "it's not cute." Most guys snicker at it and my friends come right out and say that I am driving a girl's car and/or ask if I feel like less of a man driving it. I recieved much better/more responses driving in my other cars, with the most accolades being recieved while in my Corrado SLC (a VW) and MR-2 Turbo (a Toyota).

I got the MINI becuase I like quirky European cars though and I'd rather stick out because my car is unique than drive a BMW/Audi/Acura like the rest of the guys in my age bracket.

That's true, most girls' comments on my car are how cute it is. I mean what else are they gonna say? Let's say you walk past 3 babes and you hear one say "did you see how cute that guy is?" Are you gonna walk back to her and say "I'm not cute"? I doubt it!

the post about the area of the country effecting the positivity of the comments on the Mini is something i can fully identify with. before i modded the Mini all i would get were "cute" comments and "ball bustin" from the guys. once i modded the hell out of it then peoples comments changed but, i still get no respect from the guys and "cute" comments from the girls on occasion.
as a matter of fact, they did a survey and the Mini cooper is #5 on the top 10 gay cars list....not a good look.
i will just add, that i personally couldn't care less what some random person thinks of my car aside from fellow auto enthusiast. a couple HIN shows will do that to ya'.
