click clack sound

Well its been a terrible 3 days while my mini has been in the garge, beacuse we just got our driveway repaved and i did not want to leave it on the street while the driveway curred. But today was the day, I pulled it out agian.

But, when i started it i had ths clack clack clack sound when it was idling. I kept it in N for a a couple second and reved it up to around 2.5k rpms and it stopped. It was then silent the rest of the ride. It has never done this before, so im wondering if the cold making it do that?

Thanks, dave

I suspect it's the "on demand" oil pump not priming as well as it should. The revs increased the pressure and primed the "clacking" journals.

interesting you mention it could be oil pump, beacuse the first 20 miles of that ride was silent, but smelled like oil and we were confused as hell! nothing was leaking, it only smelled when my window was down, but when you went up to it out side to get in, you couldnt smell it anymore.

is this from the cold, just braking in, any ideas?

Don't forget the injectors click too at idle. The noise diminishes as the engine warms up and at higher revs. Nothing to worry about, BMWs do this too. (My Z3 coupe does it)

Minis have an on demand water pump not oil pump. A internal combustion engine should always be in demand of oil.
