I am a firm believer in these little devices, had them in every car that I owned. They take the load off the main filter and let it do its job more efficiently without having to deal with all the extra magnetic crud, especially during run in. I tried to do all the Google searches but there is nothing specific as yet that I can find. (Dealers Take Note) .It would be nice to have the METRIC size of the original plug so that it could be matched to available sizes. This also applies to the transmissions, when that time comes.!! R56 owners keep your eyes open for any info. Anyone got any extra thoughts on this ??
It is worth putting one on.if you can find one..in addition you can also add a magnet around the oil filter...you can find them on line. Although the filter will catch all the debris it makes me feel better.

I personaly had used these and they work !!!!

When using a magnetic drain plug on all of my previous cars and Harley Davidsons when changing the oil the drain plugs always had what looks like black hair on the magnet. The substance that looks like hair is really metal wear that is almost like dust. It is the stuff the filter does not pick up. It sure won't hurt to use one.

For all you Mini DIY guys ( r56) the size of the drain plug definitely is 14MMx1.5MM.

Gentlemen, new onto the scene is www.magnets-clean-motor-oil.com we are a new authorized vendor to NAM to help owners keep their engine clean and make them last a lot longer. This is all we do! DIMPLE tm is the trade name for our products, we specialize in MINI Super drain plugs! although we can manufacture any plug for any car upon request. All our magnets are specially made for us, we specify the strongest magnets in the world in high temperature grade and they are specially fitted to a new plug. These magnets are so strong they clean the oil 24/7, even when the engine is stopped! These magnets are not toys and should be treated with care when not in your engine, they will wipe out a credit card strip immediately or a cd. You turbo equipped owners will especially like how it removes all those metal nano particles out of the turbo bearings because your engine oil is the oil that lubricates the turbo bearings.

We also have them available for all mini standard transmissions, 16mmX1.5 and 18mmX1.5. please help us out by running your vin # by your MINI parts dept. for the correct size before ordering.Trans. have a fill plug and a drain plug I put Dimples on both while I am at it. Call or email, I would be glad to help you out. On your future posts you can include DIMPLE, as another modification!!

I'd be interested in hearing how a magnet wipes out a CD, since CDs are not magnetic. They are recorded using lasers to burn tiny pits into the surface. The magnet does what?

It isn't a placebo effect, they actually work.

Here's a sorta-freebie tip. Do you have a Sonicare toothbrush? Next time you swap out brush heads, remove the two magnets. You might need to pry them off. They are quite strong and will latch onto the drain bolt. Give that a try if you don't want to ante up for a magnetic drain bolt.

Thank you for the affirmation, YES they do work. It was nice to give people a heads up about toothbrush magnets, howevever, regular magnets loose power at 175 deg. F and might fall off. My magnets are custom made to run at full power to over 300 deg. F. and are professionally fastened to the drain plug. DIMPLES are simply the best. Before putting on toothbrush magnets on your beautiful MINI, please call me and I will work with you, I love MINI's and I don't want yours hurt!

I spent years in Army aviation maintenance. We had magnets inside all our gearboxes. The magnets were attached to the threaded plug. They routinely picked up 'dust' as well as the occassional shavings. They were connected to a couple of electrical pickups that would turn on a cockpit light when ferrous metal bridged the gap. Dust never did that, but the filings did.

Don't know that this observation helps much, but I'm trying to get to 5th gear.

Here, I thought this thread would be about a magnetic drain plug in that you could stick it to the underbody and not lose it when changing your oil.

And it seems that a few in here may feel this would prove to be much more useful.

Somewhere out there is a magnet sleeve you can put around oil filter housings that cause metal to stick to the housing. Don't know how well they work, but it would serve the same purpose.

Mr. Dimple sells them

Hi RRCANIGLIA,
The thing that wraps around the filter is sold by Mr.Dimple in a previous post link. Look on the claen filter website and you will find it. Personaly I think the plug works just as good or better.

Hi guys, yes I do have filter mags, however, minis don't have spin on filters! Best bet is the Dimple drain plug, works well as you will notice at oil change time. cheers.

But will you answer them - my emails and PM to you about getting an incorrect plug(*) have gone unanswered for several days now.

(*) I ordered using their search function, received a 14x1.5 plug for my '08 Clubman. When I went to install, I discovered my car has a 16mm plug.

Magnetic oil filter wraps and drain plugs are inexpensive and certainly won't hurt anything. However the bulk of contaminants that get into your engine oil are not magnetic (i.e. dirt). At best, a magnet can detect a problem before the engine is completely destroyed, but as long as the engine is actually losing metal fragments, neither magnets nor divine intervention will save it, you need a mechanic immediately.

The people earlier in this thread who were saying magnetic oil drain plugs were a "placebo" are simply talking about something they have zero experience with. From my Vipers to my trucks to my MINIs, I run these in all of them. They all have aluminum blocks, yet when you pull the plug after the first oil change you will be shocked at how much dark grey/black "goo" you will see on that magnet. Wait until the oil runs off of it, and use your bare finger to wipe it off the magnet and you will realise it is all super fine METAL that has been pulled out of the oil. It is like a powder. Rearends and transfer cases leave a LOT more on the magnets. I change my own fluids, rebuild my engines, etc. I hate seeing bad advice being passed out by people who do not know what they are talking about, and just offer an opinion anyway.

And yet I just went and ordered one of the plugs from the vendor that posted in this thread. The information is still valid and relevant. Your point?

My R53 & my wife's R55 both wear Mr. Dimple's plugs. Can't hurt a thing & most likely helps, why not?
