R56 Is Higher MPG Important to You?
Interesting article
For some reason, I thought of this thread when reading about the effect of an automobile on the environment.
The lower emissions are good but second link shows the 07 MINI Cooper, apparently not the S, getting 37 mpg on the highway. I would expect a lot more from the Cooper since my 05 MCSJCW has gotten very close to 35 mpg and that was while traveling at high speed for most of the tank. High speed meaning around 85 mph. Not racing folks, just keeping up with the flow.
Any thoughts on this?

As I was thinking about a new car I was attracted to the R53 MCS. However, a review I read claimed 18 mpg, which rubbed my tree-hugging tendencies the wrong way. When I started hearing that people were getting 27-30 mpg for the R56 MCS, it removed any pangs of conscience that would have kept me from a MCS.
However, I hear the latest MCS coming over has some of the grill in the scoop opened to let air through.
It will only let splashed rain water and dirt get into the engine bay. I don't like the idea. The intercooler is not there either. It's somewhere though, right?
I guess you'll have to get the JCW upgrade, when it is ready. My MA says it will use the scoop for an intake to the air filter.
Not knockin the concept, but...
Sure the mileage is nice (07 MCS here in Port Hueneme in DAYS) but IF any of you are THAT seriously concerned, you should be riding a BIKE and I mean a bicycle!... all you can. Or walking. Then you won't have that GUILT that seems to be bugging you. I ride my Tour Easy recumbent all I can. But the Mini...it's about hauling *** on the BENT ROADS. Same with the Grinnall Scorpion. So for me, mpg is a nice secondary, but if I was a real cheapskate I'd do what the lady of the house has done and drive a Toyota Yaris. Oh yeah, the Yaris is now at 17k miles, does around 40 mpg in mixed city/country driving, even better on the freeway and has actually come up with an electrical issue...the stalk switch seems to not be turning the instrument lights on when the headlights are switched on. Other than that, no rattles, no issues, no nothing but oil/filter changes in our garage and DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE. Oh yeah, the Yaris hatchback was under twelve grand. But SHE won't be driving the Mini. That's MINE.
One of the biggest reasons I waited for the R56 - perhaps the biggest - was the increase in MPG. I'm very concerned with climate change issues, am certain I'm not alone in that, and have spent considerable effort contemplating what I can do to decrease my impact. I was always a little surprised the older Mini's had as low MPG as they did, considering their engine size. This was a huge selling point for me in waiting for the new model (a near 20% increase!). Yet, in post-launch user reviews I rarely see this commented on, nor mentioned as a reason anyone preferred the R56 over earlier models.

Gas prices back up to all time high of $3.50 again...
Can't til the next election or another CA proposition against the oil
company so that magically gas demand will drop back to zero and no
short of supply and FORCE the gas price back down the low $2s...:-D

He says people saying they want to save the earth makes him sick. Need we say more?? Now, back on topic. I did not buy the MINI for it's MPG. In fact, I am sure I won't get very good mileage. Having said that, I am sure it is the best I can get having this much fun!
Skuzzy, I ordered mine Feb. 23 and it just went into production on Monday. So, looks like yours should be hopping into the incubator soon.
I think we got that one figured out LynnEl. It seems to have to do with the 6 speed on an MC. My local dealer had told me that it would not be available until April production. I had flat forgotten about that.
The most likely explanation for the delay in your car's construction is that each dealer is alloted a certain number of build slots and once those are gone for a month, they have to wait for a new set the following month. Which is why LynnEl had to wait.
By the way, March cars were the first for the U.S. to come with navigational systems. Which I also had to wait for, even though I've had a deposit in since October.
Not really important to me. I'm already getting twice the mileage, or more, sometimes approaching threee times, of my last non-MINI vehicle. If it were important I would have gotten the MC instead of the MCS.
Or better yet a VW turbo diesel.

I am by no means, environment guy. But, I do try to walk places when I can, or bike, or scoot. So when I saw that the R56 MCS gets better mileage than my old Cooper, I was pleasantly surprised. If it hadn't, I would not have chosen a different car based on mileage (ok, I pretty much only drive MINIs and BMWs...) but to me, it's an added bonus. In a very real sense, the MINI does several things to help the environment, it is recyclable, gets good mileage, helps reduce greenhouse emissions, and looks very cute driving down the road. (All these are important to a great driving experience, can you imagine a world where the only car was a Toyota Prius?? Gag...)

actually it is whiny comments like yours that will rile people up. politics of oil happens to be the #1 issue in the world today as our empire invades and steals oil. watch for the upcoming bogus decision by the bogus iraqi "government" that will guarentee "mission accomplished" for the evil empire.

Now ....back to our regularly scheduled program.
Good for you! (seriously, not tongue in cheek). But I still need a replacement car - believe me, I wish I didn't have to spend the $$$. So I'm getting the cleanest, smallest car that is practical for me. Home modifications will have to wait, and I'll get by until then by just turning my heater down and turning off some lights.
furthermore, there is no honest look at what can be done...even if all 300milion people here drove a prius the developing nations like india and china that are being exempted, and will have billions of people in their populations polluting at will
So no I dont base what I drive on MPG at all.....I drive what is fun to drive, and the Cooper fits that bill
EXCUSE ME! There has NEVER been a country in the history of the world who has so much power, and abused it so little! You sit here in freedom and have the callousness to not care that everyone is entitled to liberty and democracy as you have it.....no finer example of hypocrisy.....and I could be no more offended than at the notion that YOUR comment was the least bit constructive
America is the best country on Earth and I love it dearly, but our ***** doesn't stink any less than anyone elses. Take off your blinders and open your eyes. We have some of the brightest people in the world as our citizens, yet we continually vote in some of the dumbest. We're a country based on religious freedom who votes in conservative Christians to lead us. We tout our technology, yet we're being beaten aside by countries we bombed back into the third world 60 years ago. Hypocracy is in our blood.
Again I love this country and would fight for it dearly, but the beauty is that I have the right to fight for it in my words, thoughts, and deeds.
