2007 Mini Cooper, Mini Cooper S (R56) EPA Fuel Estimates
Anyone w/fuel economy stats on the new 2007's, MT? I hear that the new R56 are supposedly going to have 20% better fuel economy than the 1st generation, but can anyone validate this? And is this for both engine types?
Based on the 2006 ConsumerGuide review at the following link:
http://consumerguideauto.howstuffwor...i-cooper-6.htm
though figures show the base (non-S) as 28/36 and the S as 25/32, the actual performance runs make it seem like both cars averaged ~25mpg for MT. Just trying to decide between the base and S. If fuel economy is significantly better in the base, that might be my deciding factor. But it seems like there's not that much difference from this particular review atleast?

Since the EPA reworked their fuel economy testing recently I'm going to use all 2007 data, and compare the new R56 coupes to the older platform R52 Cabrios.
- 2007 R56 MC = 32/40 MT, 30/37 Auto
- 2007 R52 MCc = 27/35 MT, 26/33 Auto
- Improvement = 18.5%/14% MT, 15%/12% Auto
- 2007 R56 MCS = 29/36 MT, 27/34 Auto
- 2007 R52 MCSc = 25/32 MT, 23/32 Auto
- Improvement = 16%/12.5% MT, 17.4%/6% Auto

Thanks for the info! This might justify my getting an 'S' after all, aside from it's other obvious and attractive attributes, of course! But I've been looking long and hard for a fun car w/great fuel economy- this looks like it might just be the one! I test drove a new civic maybe a month ago and although it might be great on gas mileage, it was pathetic at accelerating and I seriously think it posed a big safety risk to have such poor acceleration like that at highway speeds. I think a lot of reviewers fail to take that into account or are atleast inaccurate in their test runs. Anyways, can't wait to test drive one of the minis!

MC2 Magazine (very nice mag, by the way) had a feature about the Prince in the latest issue. In that article they claim a 25% improvement in the Cooper S, when measuring with the EU cycle! YEAH BAYBEE! Here are the numbers they gave:
EU Cycle-Miles per U.S. Gallons
MC _ 2007 _ 2006
urban _ 30.1 _ 24.2
Extra-urban _ 51.1 _ 44.4
Combined _ 40.6 _ 34.1
6.5mpg improvement OR 19.1%
MCS _ 2007 _ 2006
urban _ 26.4 _ 19.9
Extra-urban _ 41.3 _ 34.6
Combined _ 34.1 _ 27.3
6.8mpg improvement OR 24.9%
They give a lot more specs in the article. I highly recommend the magazine.
