R56 Cold start issue on MCS R56 LCI (N18)
Cold start issue on MCS R56 LCI (N18)
Hello guys,
I would like to expose my problem in order to try to fix it. I have a Mini Cooper S N18 (Continental HPFP version) stage 2 already from RPMPower (with JCW turbo).
1 year ago more or less the car during the cold start had an inconstant rpm, basically the rpm during the cold start fluctuate between 700 rpm but it compensate immediately with 1100 rpm, but a "weak" cold start and not a normal one.
I live in Portugal and in September (cold weather) the cold start became worst, the car shutdown after kick-in, multiple times (tries to do a cold start, inconstant rpm and go down). I need to start the car like 3/4 times and sometimes holding the gas pedal to avoid the car go down.
One important note: After the car warmed up, everything is perfect, no hesitations, no hiccups, nothing. Even if I stop the car, idle is OK without any drops.
So I started to try to fix it. below you can find what I already did to figure it out:
- Change battery to a new one
- Cleaned MAF
- Installed the new timing chain tensor
- Change the thermostat and coolant sensor temperature
- Test different coils and spark plugs (mine are preaty new but I test that also)
- I have a HPFP pump with 2years, but yesterday I bought and installed a new one and the problem stays
- I already opened the valve cover to see if something is wrong with time chain, valves, etc, and everything looks ok (and no carbon)
- I already measured the pressure in all cylinder and everything is OK
- I also changed the oil and oil filter recently (2months ago)
To be honest I don't know what to do. I have no CEL (so it means no clue).
The only things that popped up in the CEL was in July, and error about "loose power" and the following error 2DCE. It is related with Valvetronic but it is a generic error, I cleaned it, cleaned also the relay from valvetronic and everything ok till now (no errors).
The only things that currently I am thinking about is the valvetronic system, probably some solenoid (N18 have 2) or even the valvetronic servomotor.
Anything here already had a problem like that? If so How did you solved that? Furthermore, if someone can share some knowledge in order to help me to figure it out what is happening, I would be thankfully.
Here you can find a video with the issue that I mentioned above:

Thank you in advance.

Where did you get the "new" HPFP? Many of the aftermarket "China" made pumps have been know to have issues right out of the gate.
Also, with that code, I would just go ahead and change out the VANOS solenoids.

I bought the PSA version (so same HPFP but cheaper). It is an original, I don't have nothing against chinese products but in my car I just install original stuff

Yes I am thinking to install 2 new solenoids. New solenoids from BMW are improved when comparing to the oldest one. Probably it will solve the problem. But currently I have no errors from solenoid, I just had 1 time (in july) and no more errors popped up again.
Once again thank you
