New to Mini - how to assess clutch wear in 2012 base model?

I am currently looking at getting my first Mini (for my daughter, actually). Everything on the car checks out, except uncertainty around the clutch. The car is a 2012 manual base hatchback, and was bought as CPO from the Mini dealer in Austin in 2014, driven by the second owner's daughter since. It has 114k miles on the original clutch. I grew up driving manuals (in Europe), but have never driven a Mini, so not sure what a 'good' clutch should feel like. When I drove the car yesterday, the clutch pedal was somewhat soft, and the engagement point pretty high up in the pedal travel, and not particularly snappy/defined. When in gear, the car would pull reasonably (for a 120 hp car), e.g. no noticeable slippage.

How many miles should a base R56 get from a clutch, assuming no abuse? Is there an easy way to check the clutch for wear without incurring high shop time (e.g. to open it up)?

In a perfect world the clutch still has good life on it and I'll own my first Mini by the end of today =)

Cheers, SL

114k miles on an original clutch? You can pretty much bet it's time to replace.

My R56 N12 has 155K or so on it with the original clutch. It feels great. One test would be to fully depress the accelerator while in low revs in 2nd or 3rd gear. This would make the clutch "slip" on the flywheel if it was worn. One other test I do is to quickly release the clutch when down shifting w/o Rev matching and see if the car "bucks" a little. This would tell you that the clutch is connecting to the flywheel quickly indication well functioning friction material and mating surfaces.

As it is a hydraulic clutch, I do not think engagement height of the pedal is an indicator.

There's no way to tell you how many miles a clutch should last. An inexperienced driver could wear a clutch out in a day. But 114K is definitely up there. The only test you can really do without taking the car apart is the slip test. Best done going up a gentle hill, floor the gas in 3rd or 4th gear.

Mine lasted a long time buit it was on base model and a single mass flywheel. I dont do smoking burnouts or ride the clutch a lot. Got like 190ish out of it, I have over 100K on my JCW R58 and its strong. I find the clutch can go more if you have a bunch of boost and power or people ride the clutch more.

Can test it like above or pull it off. Some guys go to the track and if it can handle a track day or 2 with no problem, it has some life.
