Meaning of sub menu item 6 - Still stalling issue
Hello all,
2007 Mini Cooper S. I have been chasing a stalling issue for awhile now, posted earlier on it. Havent succeeded 100% yet, but still trying. I was ready to pull the trigger on a new computer, but before I did, I had someone read the codes with a more specific code reader who told me it was not computer related, but I had a valve cover issue and MAF sensor issue. I put in a new valve cover which seemed to help or at least prolong the stalling. Still need a new MAF, one I bought threw a code the moment I put it on. Anyways, I am trying to chase now the fuel sending units in the tank to see if they relate to my issue. The reason I wonder is because, when I go into the sub menu (where yo hold down the trip button then have to add up the numbers in the VIN then put it in menu 19 to unlock the menus) #6 it gives me a reading of 28.8 on the Left and *.** stars on the RIght. I wondered if there is an issue with the float, so I removed it and use my DVM and got a reading as I moved the lever. So to my question, what is the 28.8 telliing me about the left side (fuel pump unit itself) and the right side not having any reading? Another symptom related is I only get 3/4 showing fuel level on the dash. I drove the Mini about 50 miles after replacing the valve cover and was getting excited that I may have been past my issue, but the car died on me as I got in to leave a local business. It did start back up. Then I had another stop and when I tried to start it, it tired, stumbled, but regain and ran and I was able to drive it another 15 miles back into my town. I sat for about 10 minutes letting it run and then drove to my last stop. Just before I got there, it stumbled and stalled. A few tries it started back up. This time around, when it stalled, the gas gauge was reading empty, so I filled the tank, where it only took six gallons. So the gauge reads empty, but the tank is about half. So I am wondering if the stalling is part of the fuel sending units and/or fuel level sensor. It may not be, but there is still the issue of the fuel level not registering correctly. So what more is there to the fuel filter side sending unit if I do get a resistance reading when the arm moves?
Edit. Found that the 28.8 means that is the amount of fuel in liters(7.6 gallons) on the left. So the right side is not reading fuel level even though the float has resistance measurements.

I'm currently working on a fuel level issue myself. From what I have found, the 28.8 on the left indicates liters of fuel, the right should show similar level in liters (288278).
*** shows failure of either wiring or fuel level sender. The left side is both sending unit and fuel pump. Not sure if this helps.

Update. As I was trying to figure out the fuel issue, I decided to pull the fuel filter housing up out of the tank enough to keep it hook up so I could move the float. I had resistance. I decided to start the car and when doing so, I got a spray of fuel coming form the twist top. So when I removed it, I found I had a bad O-ring. I had changed this twice before and still didnt get it right. So replaced the fuel filter and a new O-ring and put it back the same way and started the car. No more spray, but only for a few seconds when the top blew off the housing. So I bought another filter housing sending unit but installed it correctly before trying to start it. I no longer how the spraying noise from inside that tank. So dealing with my stalling issue, I have been driving it around waiting for it to happen. It hasnt happened yet, but I havent driven it as far as I have other times when it acted up. That will happen in a few days. So with the new valve cover, MAF and sending unit, it runs really good. While driving it around, I did get a check engine light and found that I had not clip the little hose coming off the back of the cover on tight enough. Now I have driven it a few days, 10-20 miles without any light. So I am making progress. I am now down to dealing with the fuel level correctly showing on the carrots display. After putting the new fuel housing in, I reset everything and my carrots dropped down from the 3/4 to a half a tank. While driving these past few days, the carrots have dropped with consumption and show two now. My sub menu 6 reads on the left what I believe to be the correct fuel level. I still get **.** on the right side.
