Back to the MINI world

I have decided to start looking for an MCS after being away for a while. This will be a second car (weekend toy) and modified in both suspension and engine performance areas over the next few years. I was only entertaining an R53 at first but the second generation seems to be capable of as much or 'more', which is why I am here!
Through some reading on these pages, I gather that the N14 is far less desirable from a reliability standpoint than the N18. It would also appear that much of this can be overcome (full engine rebuild is not something that would scare me). Sticking to an N14 engined car will afford me a fairly low buy in price, which translates to more aftermarket parts sooner!
In my recent local searches, I have come across a 2009 Cooper S with @ 120k miles. This is priced at a bit under $6k, and carfax shows timing chain replacement in 2012 at @ 60k miles. No other major work shows in carfax, and I assume that no clutch or brake replacement has occurred and would go in with the assumption (and possible negotiation point) that these and possibly some other things need to be done soon.
Is it reasonable to assume that the chain and tensioner done 6 years and 60k ago would be 'safe' for a year while I gather parts for a rebuild?
I have read about turbo oil lines, carbon buildup on the valves, PCV system issues, etc...none too scary as far as I can tell, but part of me wonders if the extra money spent on an N18 car is smarter in the long run?
Thank you in advance for your response and any guidance you care to share!
