Don't lose your keys - my suggestion

Wanted to make a separate post here on How to Maybe get your lost keys back - cheap and easy way to give the 'Finder' a way to contact you without giving out your location

Go on the internet - google Military dog tag - about $5 - get some made with our name & cell number & Reward - Most people would return lost keys IF they knew the owner - this is a great way for them to call you - a bottle of wine / case of beer / Starbuck gift card - would be a cheap way to get your key back

I have blacked out my cell number - don't need any prank calls from around the world - hey, dude, found your keys, lol

One thing I might suggest is to get yourself a free Google Voice number for this. That's just one more layer of obfuscation that someone would have to get through to find your location....
A lot of people would pay the fee to join a site that claims to access cellular tracking and locating (even for a few hundred dollars) if they thought the trade off was a "free" MINI.
I like your idea though. Even if you paid someone a $50 finder's fee, you're still WAY cheaper than a new fob through the dealer!

I have had those made for several years - I do Have a Google voice number. I do understand your thinking,,, Lots of BAD things would have to fall into place for someone to actually steal my mine + its never left outside and its almost 10 years old... but still possible..
point made

Great idea! I've never lost my keys, but this is most definitely a worthwhile investment. Thanks.
