N14 rebuild. Can you use an N12 block?

I recently bought a 2007 mini cooper s the wasn't running to build back up for a fun car to play with. The cylinder walls are pretty scratched up and would need to be bored to be fixed. I found a good deal on an upper block for cheaper than what I've been quoted to fix the block I have the only problem is it's out of a non turbo n12. From what I can tell the engine blocks look the same, can they be swapped?

No you cannot use it. The N14 engine has pistons oil cooling jets where the N12 does NOT have them. check car-part.com for engine blocks

thanks for the advise I found several blocks on there. just for curiosity sake can you bore the block out to 77.5mm without using sleeves?

Yes, the N14 block can be bored out to 77.5mm without using sleeves. However, that leaves even less wall between the cylinder and water jacket. If you plan on lotsa boost and high compression, go for a Cylinder Support System that will minimize the possibility of blowing out a cylinder. I blew out a 77.0 cylinder with 10.5:1 CR and 30psi --- these walls need more support than a sleeve provides.
