2007 MCS Air Bag Issue

In December 2015 my 2007 MCS had the air bag warning light come on.
I went to the local dealer. They knew about the problem. They said that the problem was likely with the sensor pad under the passenger seat and would require $1600 to repair it. The seat would have to be removed to fix it. However, even if I was willing to pay for it, there were no parts available nation wide.

I asked why this would not be covered under a recall. There is apparently a recall for the R53 series for this same problem. They said nothing yet on that yet for the R56.

I went back again earlier this month and was told that the situation has not changed.

I am very concerned, as my wife rides in the passenger seat. My first step is going to be to send an e-mail to Mini. Then after I see what they say, I will consider going to the NHTSA. But I wanted to know if anyone else here on the forum has had the same problem.

No, Have not messed with anything in the seat. And there actually is seldom a passenger in the seat. We use the car as a weekender. It has very low miles for its age. What gets me is that there are no parts available, period. at least that is what the dealer tells me. Other than that the car is in great shape and is a pleasure to drive. But this is a big concern.
