Replacing turbo

Do I need to remove the exhaust manifold to get the turbo off?

Yes, unless you have some special tools that can get to the backside of the exhaust manifold where the turbo attaches.

That's how I swapped mine. I took the entire manifold and turbo. I also ordered a new manifold gasket and new stud bolts and nuts since I was taking it apart. I didn't want to have to do it again and it was a small price compared to the overall cost of the project.

You also need copper anti seize on those studs and nuts etc.

You don't have to as I've done it without taking off the manifold, but it's easier to take it all off as one part then take the turbo off the manifold

Diagram for your DIY. The bolts from the turbo to manifold and turbo to DP can be a little hard to get off , hit them with PB blaster and let sit first. Of course with the engine cool or cold. Replace all the hardware you remove along with the gaskets.

I was able to remove mine without taking the manifold off. I used a swivel ratchet switch from Lowes like this:
