CAN Engine Coolant Temp Invalid/Random Misfires — Need Help

Hi 2nd Gen Mini Folks,

I have 2009 MCS w/84K on it. The other day everything was fine until the Amber Engine light came on. I went to get a code reader because I've been in a MINI Shop what seems to be every month for the last 6 months.

I'm getting 6 Codes.

P173B CAN Engine Coolant Temperature Invalid

P112B Engine Coolant Temperature Too Low

P0300 Random Midfire Detected

P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected

P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

P173B CAN Engine Coolant Temperature Invalid

I replaced the temp sensor to see if that was the problem. But nothing changed. And now the I'm getting even more I errors codes.

Someone please give me some advice as to what to do. I'm at my wits end.

Thanks,
Yoshi

Hello Yoshi,

I have the very same year and model as your car and after replacing the thermostat is also getting the same problems. Where you able to fix the problem? If you were could you please share it with me.

Thnaks in advance and Happy New Year.

So here is what I did that gave me issues, and might be yours as well. The connectors are easily mixed up at the top. There's also one toward the back that I missed. I stole these pics and tweaked them a bit. Ignore the red arrows; they are part of the write-up from Pelican.

In my case I switched the PCV and temp sensor connectors; they seem to be almost identical. The one I've labeled 'other connector' (since I have no idea what it is), I seem to have misplaced and will have to go back in and find it. I think I buried it under some tubing. I am getting two codes with the CEL; P0597 and P0598, which I strongly suspect will go away after I find that miscreant connector.

Good luck!

Ray
