2011 MCS 6 spd manual got 36.6 average on a trip from SoCal to NorCal on the I5, cruise set at 75, as much as possible, A/C on, Sport mode off. Daily driving on my partially mountainous commute 29.8, A/C half the time, Sport mode on, TRYING to be good!

Reason: clarity
2010 MCS, my Comp. For the last 2k miles shows an average of 33.9 mpg. I hand calculated the last two tanks which was around 800 miles to be 31.67 mpg.
Mostly back roads, some city, some highway. Sport mode always on. 6 speed manual.
Hmm, how are you all getting this kind of mpg? The average consumption function on my Justa shows 22.5 mpg. I put 1300 (mostly city) miles on since I got it - '10 manual.

Hm, there is either something wrong with your car, or you drive on a race track.
I have a 2013 MCS and do about 70% city driving. I see average of 27.#s I have never seen under 26.9 but never have seen over 28.6. Running 93. I have a K&N drop in filter and cat-back exhaust. I wanna see 30mpg or more!

Easy, pump up your tires to 60psi and only drive downhill..
2010 base Cooper here. On a recent 800+ mile cross country trip, I managed 38mpg, hand calculated (this was at a higher altitude.) Around town, I see numbers closer to 30. I usually drive with the live fuel economy data displayed in order to drive in an efficient manner. Acceleration kills fuel economy, which is my justification for not slowing down in the corners!
Good fuel economy on an S R56 manual? Pull it out of gear, and coast downhill. Most of my morning commute is downhill on twisties. Granted, my MPG gets hobbled some by passing slower cars, and my uphill trip home. But still at 28.7 MPG average! Beats the heck out of the 15.5 average I was getting in my 94 Bonneville! AND...Way more FUN to drive! I LOVE my MINI! Puts a big smile on my face every time I take the wheel! Better MPG and a Smile? Yup! That's how I roll!
08 Justa manual, 26-28mpg around town, 40-42mpg at 80mph on cruise for long trips with no traffic or hills - calculated by gallons / miles, no idea what the car computer says.
great, thanks for all the feedback. Looks like im a little low. Will head back to the dealer and have them check it out.
MPG is reliant on so many variables, it's hard to pinpoint if there is a problem at all, or 1 specific reason you "think" you should be getting higher numbers.
Tire pressure should be in high 30s I run at 38psi.
Using proper octane (91 here) and lowest carbon count (10% here)
Pressing the loud pedal conservatively
Coasting as much as possible, clutch-coasting in a manual
Avoiding unnecessary braking/acceleration
Even something as small as hitting 3 red lights in a row can damage your short term mpgs. It's only a worthwhile measurement when considered across 5 or more fill-ups. There are so many factors at play during 1 tank of gas it could swing really high or really low.
My 2010 Cooper with an automatic transmission averages 32 MPG in Long Island traffic, and 39.5 on the highway, loaded with gear and the air conditioner on.
