I feel your pain. Realize that I said the situation was strange not you. But it seems like some bad or hasty decisions are being made. And some of these decisions are quite expensive.

Here's a summary,

Symptom: engine running poorly after getting painted. Loss of power. Engine in limp mode.

Items Replaced or scheduled to be replaced:

timing chain assembly
vanos solenoids cleaned
serpentine belt
cam shaft seal
2 connecting rods (because they were kind of bent)
spark plugs
new rings (scheduled)
one piston (scheduled)

Basically you are rebuilding the motor BUT in a half-a$$ way. How much is this costing compared to putting in a new motor? I'm not being negative just trying to be honest with an objective opinion.

No one is being negative towards you.
We just think that it is rather strange that you took a running/driving car in for body work and the car is returned to you now needing a motor (scratch head here).
I sounds like your getting screwed by someone--doesn't matter if the body shop is your best friend--something happened that he either knows about and is not telling you or something happened that he is unaware of.

Either way your paying a very big bill for something someone else did to your car--this has to be costing you around $5000. And your mechanic is just patching it together. Your better off just stepping back and finding a used or rebuilt bottom end (compete) or your asking for more trouble down the road.

People are just trying to help you!!!

No I'm not at $5000. Maybe at the dealership yes! Reading all the horror stories of replacing unnecessary parts doesn't put anyone at ease. Thought it was a simple fix at first, turns out, No it wasn't only the timing chain assembly until he dug deeper. No one had the same problem on here either. Everyones is different. What kills us is the distance and the availability of (insert curses) parts. Not four sets of piston rings could be ordered only two could be found at this Ontario company. Doesn't make sence! Same with the piston I need. NOT ONE CAN BE FOUND?! Another 2 weeks wait from the UK it is!

Day 77 compressing piston rings.

Had to laugh at my last post. Apparently all parts ordered from Germany are put on a rush order. Ha! Turned out the pistons were on back order so I had to wait longer. Anyway. I have the 4 pistons. Last time I checked he was having trouble compressing the rings. Is there a special tool needed for this or is there I hate to say it trick to compressing the rings? Had I known all this crap was going to happen I would have dropped a new motor in her.

No special trick--standard ring compressor--UNLESS they are the wrong rings (for .25mm or .5mm overbore) then it would be very difficult. Or wrong pistons--overbore for standard bore cylinder??

Was the block bored out or just honed? Measure the pistons too.

I feel for you!!! So glad I can do all this myself and no one else to blame!!

These are the specs are for the R56 n12 motor right? I am about to call the garage. HEADS WILL ROLL if they sent the wrong pistons or rings! My patience is gone. You are lucky! I am dreading the bill for all this headache.

Pistons should be part #11257589348
Rings #11257566479

Check the invoices/shipment.

As far as I can find, there are no BMW/Mini rings/pistons for bored out block, so check the part numbers--maybe from wrong engine R53??

ahhh I guess she will be ready tomorrow afternoon. I guess his tools were to big or worn to compress the rings and found (coughs) a special tool to do the job. Oh lord I'll be happy when this is all done.

After a long wait of 77 days.

Took 77 days but I Got my girl back on Sept 9th. She sounds and drives GREAT! The total..$ 5,595.93 The cause a top guide rail broke, the major ones were 2 cracked pistons just under the rings. We replaced all four pistons and the timing assembly along with many other parts too numerous to list. Just happy to have her back up and running.
